What it is

Spanish has two ways of talking about time and the past. Hace + a period says when something happened: hace dos años, two years ago. Desde, desde hace and hace … que say how long a situation has been going on, and they use the present tense where English uses "have been".

  • Measuring something that is still true: Trabajo aquí desde 2021. Hace un año que no la veo.

Contrasts and traps

  • "I've lived here for three years" is present in Spanish: Vivo aquí desde hace tres años. He vivido aquí por tres años sounds translated.
  • Hace goes before the period: hace dos años, not dos años hace.
  • Hace dos años already means "two years ago": don't add atrás.
  • In parts of Latin America you'll also hear Vivo acá hace tres años, without desde.

If you also speak Portuguese

Portuguese há or faz covers both jobs: Cheguei há dois anos and Moro aqui há três anos. Spanish splits them: Llegué hace dos años and Vivo aquí desde hace tres años. Never hay: it only means "there is".
