The short answer
English says I'm hungry, I'm cold, I'm scared. Brazilian Portuguese turns these feelings into nouns and uses four verbs around them: estar com for how you feel right now (tô com fome), ter for lasting feelings and facts about you (tenho medo de altura), ficar com for the moment a feeling starts (fiquei com raiva) and dar for whatever causes it (esse filme me dá sono).
How to form it
The nouns stay the same; only the verb changes. In speech, estou is almost always tô, and está is tá.
| now: estar com | it starts: ficar com | lasting: ter | the cause: dar | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Other nouns that work the same way: sede (thirst), pressa (hurry), raiva (anger), ciúme (jealousy), preguiça (laziness), and symptoms: tô com dor de cabeça, tô com febre.

Contrasts and traps
- com is not optional: Estou fome is wrong; say estou com fome.
- estar, not ser: sou com frio is impossible. A feeling is a state.
- Estou frio ≠ estou com frio. Estou frio means you are cold to the touch, or cold-hearted. Feeling cold is estou com frio; cold weather is está frio or faz frio.
- Tenho fome is correct but sounds general or formal. For right now, Brazilians say tô com fome.
- saudade has no exact English equivalent: tô com saudade de você = I miss you. Sinto falta de você is a calmer alternative.
- dor (pain) is feminine: uma dor de cabeça horrível.
If you speak Spanish
Tener hambre, frío, sueño, miedo, prisa become estar com: tô com fome, tô com frio, tô com sono. Me da sueño stays the same: me dá sono. Me dieron ganas becomes singular: me deu vontade. And watch the false friend: extrañar is estar com saudade de or sentir falta de, because Portuguese estranhar means "to find strange".
