Politeness: queria, gostaria, poderia, seria

Cortesia: queria, gostaria, poderia, seria

A23 Min. Lesezeit40 ÜbungenBaut auf: Pretérito imperfeito

Die kurze Antwort

Brazilians soften requests and wishes with the imperfeito (queria, podia) or the conditional (gostaria, poderia, seria). Learn these as chunks before the full conditional.

Direct

  • Quero um café.
  • Pode me ajudar?
  • É possível mudar a data?

Softened

  • Queria um café.
  • Poderia me ajudar?
  • Seria possível mudar a data?
Direct vs softened: one step away from the present makes a request polite.

gostaria keeps the de of gostar de, and the person is the subject.

Wichtige Formen

The short answer

To ask for things politely, Brazilians move the verb one step away from the blunt present. Quero um café becomes Queria um café; Pode me ajudar? becomes Poderia me ajudar? These forms look like the past (queria, podia) or the conditional (gostaria, poderia, seria), but here they mean "now, politely". Learn them as fixed chunks.

How to form it

chunkmeaningregister
Eu queria + noun / infinitiveI'd like…everyday polite
Eu gostaria de + infinitive / nounI would like (to)…more formal
Você podia + infinitive?Could you…?everyday polite
Você poderia + infinitive?Could you…?more formal
Seria possível + infinitive?Would it be possible to…?formal
Teria como + infinitive? Is there any way to…?polite, very Brazilian
  • Queria and podia are imperfeito forms (pt-g-029). Gostaria, poderia, seria and teria are the conditional, which you will study as a full tense later. All of them end in -ia, with no written accent.
  • Gostaria keeps the de of gostar de: Gostaria de reservar uma mesa. Gostaria de um café.
  • With o senhor / a senhora the verb stays the same: A senhora poderia assinar aqui?
  • Pronouns go before the infinitive: Você poderia me ajudar? Você podia me mandar o endereço?

When to use it

  • Ordering and shopping: Oi, eu queria um pão de queijo. When a waiter asks O que vai ser?, you can also say Vou querer um suco.
  • Asking a favour: Você podia me emprestar o carregador?
  • Formal emails and phone calls: Gostaria de saber se ainda tem vaga. Seria possível mudar a data?
  • Asking for information gently: Eu queria saber que horas a farmácia abre. Eu queria saber… works like "I was wondering…".
  • Oi, eu queria um pão de queijo e um suco de laranja.Hi, I'd like a cheese bread and an orange juice.queria = polite want
  • O senhor poderia repetir, por favor?Could you repeat that, please, sir?poderia = could you
  • Gostaria de reservar uma mesa para quatro pessoas.I'd like to book a table for four.gostaria de + infinitive
  • Teria como trocar a data da entrega? Is there any way to change the delivery date?teria como = is there a way

Kurze Übung

1 / 3

Bom dia! Eu (querer) dois pães de queijo, por favor.

Good morning! I'd like two cheese breads, please.

Contrasts and traps

  • queria vs quero: Quero um café is not rude at a counter, especially with por favor, but Queria um café is the safe default with strangers.
  • queria is not past here. Eu queria um café is about now. Only past context makes it past: Ontem eu queria sair, mas choveu.
  • gosto vs gostaria: Gosto de café means I like coffee; Gostaria de um café means I'd like a coffee.
  • pode, podia, poderia: all three are polite with por favor; poderia is the most formal.
  • desejar belongs to the waiter: O que o senhor deseja? Customers don't answer Desejo…; they say Queria… or Vou querer….
  • Later you will meet one more softener, Será que você pode…? ("I wonder if you could…", pt-g-041).

If you speak Spanish

Quisiera has no Portuguese twin here: use queria, without the accent of Spanish quería. Me gustaría is eu gostaria de: the person is the subject, as with gostar de, so never me gostaria. Podría becomes poderia (keep the e of poder) and sería becomes seria, again with no accent. And posible is spelled possível: Seria possível…?
