Conditional: forms and uses
Condicional simple: formas y usos
Die kurze Antwort
The conditional adds -ía endings to the infinitive or to the irregular stems of the future. At B1 it serves politeness (¿Podría…?, Me gustaría), advice (Deberías…, Yo que tú…) and wishes; hypotheses with si + imperfect subjunctive follow at B2.
More direct
- Quiero un café.
- ¿Puedes ayudarme?
- Tráigame la cuenta.

- Deberías descansar.

- De niño jugaba en la calle.
Conditional: would

What it is
The conditional (condicional simple) is the Spanish "would" form: hablaría = I would speak. At B1 it does three everyday jobs:
- it makes requests polite: ¿Podría ayudarme? (Could you help me?);
- it gives advice without sounding bossy: Deberías descansar (You should rest);
- it talks about wishes and imagined situations: Me encantaría vivir en la costa (I’d love to live on the coast), Yo no diría eso (I wouldn’t say that).
Imagined conditions with si ("if I had time, I would…") need one more tense, the imperfect subjunctive, which comes at B2. Real conditions (si tengo tiempo…) have a topic of their own.
How to form it
Take the whole infinitive and add one set of endings, the same for -ar, -er and -ir verbs. Every ending carries a written accent on the í.
| person | hablar | comer | vivir |
|---|---|---|---|
| yo | hablaría | comería | viviría |
| tú | hablarías | comerías | vivirías |
| él / ella / usted | hablaría | comería | viviría |
| nosotros / nosotras | hablaríamos | comeríamos | viviríamos |
| vosotros (Spain) | hablaríais | comeríais | viviríais |
| ellos / ellas / ustedes | hablarían | comerían | vivirían |
Verbs with an irregular future use the same short stem here, followed by the regular endings:
| infinitive | stem | conditional |
|---|---|---|
| tener, poner, salir, venir, valer | drop the vowel, add d: tendr-, pondr-, saldr-, vendr-, valdr- | tendría, pondría, saldría, vendría, valdría |
| poder, saber, querer, haber, caber | drop the vowel: podr-, sabr-, querr-, habr-, cabr- | podría, sabría, querría, habría, cabría |
| hacer, decir | short stem: har-, dir- | haría, diría |
Compounds follow their base verb: mantener → mantendría, proponer → propondría.
The endings look like the imperfect of comer and vivir (comía, vivía), but the conditional keeps the infinitive in front: comía (I used to eat) vs comería (I would eat).
Object pronouns go before the conditional or on the end of the infinitive that follows it: ¿Me podrías ayudar? = ¿Podrías ayudarme?
When to use it
Polite requests. The conditional softens a question. ¿Podría…? (to usted) and ¿Podrías…? (to tú) are the workhorses; ¿Le importaría…? or ¿Te importaría…? (would you mind…?) is even more polite. Me gustaría sounds softer than quiero when you ask for something, and the imperfect quería is another gentle opener: Quería preguntarte una cosa (I wanted to ask you something).
- ¿Podría traernos la cuenta, por favor?Could you bring us the bill, please?to a waiter (usted)
- ¿Te importaría prestarme tu cargador?Would you mind lending me your charger?importar works like gustar
- Me gustaría reservar una mesa para cuatro.I’d like to book a table for four.softer than quiero
Wishes. Me gustaría, me encantaría and preferiría + infinitive say what you would like to do: Me encantaría conocer Cartagena algún día. Preferiría quedarme en casa esta noche.
Advice and suggestions. Use deberías, tendrías que or podrías + infinitive. Podríamos proposes a plan: Podríamos ir al cine el viernes. To put yourself in someone else’s shoes, Spanish uses yo que tú or yo en tu lugar + conditional, the B1 way of saying "if I were you":
- Deberías descansar más: trabajas demasiado. You should rest more: you work too much.advice
- Podrías visitar Valparaíso: está a una hora y media de Santiago. You could visit Valparaíso: it’s an hour and a half from Santiago.a suggestion
- Yo que tú, hablaría con ella antes de decidir nada.If I were you, I’d talk to her before deciding anything.no si needed
Sería mejor + infinitive gives advice without pointing at anyone: Sería mejor ir en metro.
Imagining and giving opinions. Even without si, the conditional says what you would or wouldn’t do: ¿Qué harías tú en mi lugar? Yo nunca viviría en una ciudad tan grande. Con más tiempo, aprendería a tocar la guitarra.
Contrasts and traps
- Conditional or imperfect? comería ≠ comía, tendría ≠ tenía. Look for the infinitive (or the irregular stem) before the ending.
- "Would" for past habits is the imperfect: De niño jugaba en la calle (as a child I would play in the street), never jugaría.
- Never after si: Si tendría tiempo… is wrong. For a real condition use the present, Si tengo tiempo, te ayudo; for an imagined one, Si tuviera tiempo, te ayudaría (B2 preview).
- gustar works backwards: me gustaría un café, never yo gustaría.
- Future or conditional? ¿Podrás venir mañana? asks whether someone will be able to come; ¿Podrías venir mañana? is a polite request.
- tú or usted? ¿Podrías…? for friends and family; ¿Podría…? for strangers, customers or a waiter.
- Accents: podría, gustaría, tendríamos. Without the accent, the word is misspelled.
If you also speak Portuguese
The endings match the Portuguese futuro do pretérito (falaria → hablaría), but Spanish writes an accent on every í. The irregular stems differ: poderia → podría, teria → tendría, sairia → saldría. Eu gostaria de um café becomes me gustaría un café, with no de, and você se importaria de…? becomes ¿te importaría…? Where Brazilian speech uses the imperfect (eu ia adorar, eu adorava), Spanish prefers the conditional: me encantaría.

poder loses its e: podría. The conditional uses the irregular stems of the future: tendría, haría, diría.
