What it is

Connectors turn short sentences into a text. At A2 you need a small set: to add (y), to offer options (o), to contrast (pero), to give a reason (porque), to say what follows (por eso), to talk about habits (cuando) and conditions (si), and to put events in order (primero, luego, al final).

How to form it

ConnectorMeaningExample
y · eandHablo inglés y francés. Padre e hijo.
o · uor¿Té o café? Siete u ocho.

y → e, o → u. Before a word that starts with the sound i (i-, hi-), y becomes e: inglés e italiano, padre e hijo. Before the sound o (o-, ho-), o becomes u: siete u ocho, mujeres u hombres. (Hielo starts with a y sound, so: agua y hielo.)

si + present. For a real condition, si takes the present, and the other half takes the present, the future or a command: Si llueve, nos quedamos en casa. Si tienes tiempo, llámame. Never the future after si.

Sequencers for a story or a routine: primero, luego / después, entonces, al final / por último.

When to use it

In messages, stories and opinions:

  • Tengo un examen; por eso no puedo salir.I've got an exam; that's why I can't go out.consequence
  • Si quieres, te acompaño a la estación.If you like, I'll go with you to the station.si + present
  • Primero desayuno, luego me ducho y al final salgo.First I have breakfast, then I shower and finally I leave.sequence

Contrasts and traps

  • Porque (because) vs ¿por qué? (why?): —¿Por qué no vienes? —Porque estoy cansado.
  • Por eso + verb, without que: Por eso no vine.
  • Cuando + present describes habits. For a moment in the future, Spanish uses the subjunctive (cuando llegue), which comes at B1.

If you also speak Portuguese

E, ou, mas, porque, por isso → y, o, pero, porque, por eso. Spanish mas is old-fashioned: use pero. And Portuguese se você quiser or quando eu chegar (future subjunctive) don't transfer: say si quieres (present) and, at B1, cuando llegue.
