What it is

Many of the most frequent Spanish verbs have an irregular preterite. The good news: they follow a few patterns and share one set of endings.

How to form it

1. Irregular stems + shared endings. These verbs take a new stem and the endings -e, -iste, -o, -imos, -ieron, with no written accents:

InfinitiveStemyoél / ella / ustedellos / ustedes
estarestuv-estuveestuvoestuvieron
tenertuv-tuvetuvotuvieron
poderpud-pudepudopudieron
ponerpus-pusepusopusieron
sabersup-supesuposupieron
hacerhic-hicehizohicieron
quererquis-quisequisoquisieron
venirvin-vinevinovinieron
decirdij-dijedijodijeron
traertraj-trajetrajotrajeron

Three details: hizo is written with z; after j, the ellos ending loses its i (dijeron, trajeron); and hay becomes hubo: Hubo un accidente.

2. -ir verbs with a stem change. -ir verbs that change their stem in the present (pido, duermo, prefiero) also change in the preterite, but only in the third persons and only one step: e → i, o → u.

Personpedirdormir
yopedídormí
túpedistedormiste
él / ella / ustedpidiódurmió
nosotrospedimosdormimos
ellos / ustedespidierondurmieron

Like pedir: repetir, seguir, sentir, preferir, divertirse. Like dormir: morir. -ar and -er verbs never change in the preterite: pensé, pensó; volví, volvió.

When to use it

Exactly like the regular preterite: finished events at a specific time.

  • El sábado tuve que trabajar. On Saturday I had to work.tener → tuve
  • ¿Qué hiciste anoche?What did you do last night?hacer → hiciste
  • Mi hermano durmió diez horas.My brother slept ten hours.o → u

Contrasts and traps

  • No accents on irregular forms: pudo, hizo, tuve, not pudó, hizó, tuvé.
  • hice (I did) but hizo (he did).
  • dijeron, trajeron, not dijieron.
  • pidió, durmió change, but pensó, volvió don't: only -ir verbs do.

If you also speak Portuguese

Portuguese has the same strong pasts with slightly different stems: estive → estuve, tive → tuve, pus → puse, soube → supe, fiz → hice, quis → quise, vim → vine, disse → dije, trouxe → traje. In the third person: fez → hizo, veio → vino, disse → dijo.
