Quantifiers: muy, mucho, poco, bastante, demasiado

Cuantificadores: muy / mucho, poco, bastante, demasiado

短い答え

Muy goes before adjectives and adverbs (muy nublado, muy bien); mucho/a/os/as goes before nouns and agrees with them, and after a verb mucho never changes. Poco, un poco (de), bastante and demasiado follow the same logic, and the weather takes mucho: hace mucho calor.

muy + adjective / adverb

  • Está muy nublado.
  • Es muy caro.
  • Vivo muy cerca.

mucho + noun · verb + mucho

  • Hace mucho frío.
  • Hay mucha gente.
  • Llueve mucho.
Look at the next word: muy before an adjective or an adverb; mucho before a noun or after a verb.

poco: not much, few

  • Hay poca agua.
  • Ana habla poco.
  • Llueve poco.

un poco (de): a little

  • Hay un poco de agua.
  • Ana habla un poco de francés.
  • Llueve un poco.
poco says "not enough"; un poco (de) says "some".
whenhoyhacerhacehow muchmuchoweather nouncalor
Weather with hacer: calor, frío, sol and viento are nouns, so they take mucho, never muy.

重要な形

  • muy + adjective / adverb: muy grande, muy bien
  • mucho/mucha/muchos/muchas + noun: mucho dinero, mucha gente, muchos amigos
  • verb + mucho (invariable): Trabajo mucho.
  • poco/a/os/as (not much) vs un poco (de) (a little): Habla poco. Habla un poco de inglés.
  • bastante(s), demasiado/a/os/as: bastantes problemas, demasiado ruido
  • Weather with hacer: Hace mucho calor / Hace mucho frío

What it is

Quantifiers tell you how much: muy (very), mucho (a lot, much, many), poco (not much, few), un poco (a little), bastante (quite, enough) and demasiado (too, too much). You need them all the time to talk about the weather: Hace mucho calor. Está muy nublado. Llueve poco.

The key decision is muy or mucho, and the next word decides it. Watch out for "very hot" and "very cold": in Spanish the weather is a noun, so it is mucho calor, mucho frío.

How to form it

+ adjective / adverb+ noun (agrees)after a verb
muymuy nublado, muy bien——
mucho—mucho viento, mucha lluvia, muchos días, muchas nubesLlueve mucho.
poco—poco sol, poca agua, pocos turistasNieva poco.
un pocoun poco cansadoun poco de lecheHablo un poco.
bastantebastante carobastante dinero, bastantes sillasTrabaja bastante.
demasiadodemasiado carodemasiada gente, demasiados carrosComes demasiado.
  • muy never changes: muy alto, muy alta, muy altos; muy cerca, muy temprano.
  • Before a noun, mucho, poco and demasiado agree with it like adjectives: mucho calor, mucha agua, muchos días, muchas nubes. bastante only adds -s: bastantes sillas.
  • After a verb they never change: Mis hermanas duermen poco. Me gusta mucho.
  • un poco is fixed, and before a noun it needs de: un poco de leche.
  • On its own, the answer is mucho, never muy: —¿Te gusta? —Sí, mucho.
  • For extra emphasis, say muchísimo, never muy mucho.

Weather words are mostly nouns and verbs, so they mostly take mucho:

PatternQuantifierExample
hace + calor, frío, sol, vientomuchoHace mucho viento.
hace + buen / mal tiempomuyHace muy buen tiempo.
está + nubladomuyEstá muy nublado.
llueve, nievamucho, poco, bastanteEn julio nieva bastante.
hay + nieve, nubes, lluviamucho / mucha / muchos / muchasHay muchas nubes.
tener + frío, calor, hambremucho / muchaTengo mucho frío.

When to use it

  • muy makes an adjective or an adverb stronger: La playa está muy bonita hoy.
  • mucho and poco talk about amounts and about how much you do something: Hay mucha nieve. Duermo poco.
  • poco sounds negative (not enough); un poco sounds positive (some): Hay poca leche (we need more) / Hay un poco de leche (there's some left).
  • un poco + adjective softens something negative: un poco caro, un poco cansada.
  • bastante means "quite" or "enough": Hace bastante frío. Tenemos bastantes sillas.
  • demasiado means "too", more than is good: Es demasiado caro (so I won't buy it). Muy caro is just "very expensive".
  • Hoy hace mucho calor en Mérida. It's very hot in Mérida today.hace + noun → mucho
  • El cielo está muy nublado. The sky is very cloudy.adjective → muy

Contrasts and traps

  • Look at the next word. Adjective or adverb → muy. Noun → mucho / mucha / muchos / muchas. Nothing after it, or a verb before it → mucho.
  • Weather and feelings are nouns: hace mucho calor, tengo mucho frío, tengo mucha hambre (hambre is feminine). Never muy calor.
  • No de after mucho: mucho trabajo, not mucho de trabajo. Only un poco takes de.
  • poco or un poco: Ana habla poco (she's quiet) / Ana habla un poco de francés (she speaks some French).
  • la gente is singular: mucha gente, with a singular verb: Mucha gente viaja en verano.
  • Thanks: gracias is feminine plural, so muchas gracias.

If you also speak Portuguese

Muito does both jobs, so choose every time: muito bonito → muy bonito, muito calor → mucho calor, gosto muito → me gusta mucho, muito obrigado → muchas gracias. Agreement follows the Spanish gender: muito leite → mucha leche.
