El Malecón a las seis
A literary vignette on Havana's Malecón at six in the evening: Teresa, a retired piano teacher who sits on the sea wall every afternoon, notices a boy with a violin case practising a passage on an invisible fingerboard. In Cuban voice ('¿Qué tú haces aquí, mi niño?', '¿Y eso?') she learns he has skipped his lesson — the guagua didn't come, a string broke and, above all, he is afraid of Monday's concert. She makes him play on three strings ('todo el mundo resuelve con lo que hay'), beating time on the wall and humming the missing note; the passage comes out, and she invites him to her flat to pick up a spare string.
