Estar + gerund (present progressive)

Estar + gerundio

Krótka odpowiedź

Estar + gerund presents an action as in progress right now or as a temporary situation. Spanish uses it less than English: never for planned future events and rarely with state verbs like tener, saber or querer.

estoy cocinandoteraz
Estoy cocinando: the action started before now and isn't finished yet.

Progressive: in the middle of it

  • Estoy leyendo.
  • Están durmiendo.
  • Este mes estoy trabajando en casa.

Simple present: habits, states, plans

  • Leo todas las noches.
  • Tengo un carro.
  • Salgo mañana.
The progressive is for the middle of an action; habits, states and plans take the simple present.

Kluczowe formy

  • -ar → -ando (hablando); -er/-ir → -iendo (comiendo, viviendo)
  • Vowel stems → -yendo: leer (leyendo), oír (oyendo), traer (trayendo), construir (construyendo), ir (yendo)
  • -ir stem change e→i / o→u: pedir (pidiendo), decir (diciendo), sentir (sintiendo), venir (viniendo), dormir (durmiendo), morir (muriendo), poder (pudiendo)
  • Temporary situations: Este año estoy viviendo en Lima.
  • Pronouns: Lo estoy leyendo / Estoy leyéndolo (written accent when attached)

What it is

Estar + gerund (estoy hablando) shows an action in progress: happening right now, or around now for a limited time. It is the Spanish twin of the English "I'm talking", but Spanish uses it less often.

How to form it

Conjugate estar in the present and add the gerund. The gerund never changes for person, gender or number:

Personestar+ gerund
yoestoyhablando
túestáscomiendo
él / ella / ustedestáescribiendo
nosotrosestamosleyendo
ellos / ustedesestándurmiendo

Most gerunds are regular: -ar → -ando, -er/-ir → -iendo. Two groups need care:

InfinitiveChangeGerund
hablar-andohablando
comer · vivir-iendocomiendo · viviendo
leer · oír · traer · ir-yendoleyendo · oyendo · trayendo · yendo
pedir · decir · sentir · venire → ipidiendo · diciendo · sintiendo · viniendo
dormir · morir · podero → udurmiendo · muriendo · pudiendo

When the stem ends in a vowel, -iendo becomes -yendo (leyendo, construyendo). And -ir verbs with a stem change in the present also change in the gerund, but only one step: e → i, o → u.

Pronouns go before estar or on the end of the gerund, never in between. Attached, they need a written accent: Me estoy duchando = Estoy duchándome.

When to use it

  • An action happening at this moment: ¿Qué estás haciendo? —Estoy cocinando.
  • A temporary situation around now: Este mes estoy trabajando desde casa.
  • Something that is changing: Los precios están subiendo mucho.
  • Ahora no puedo hablar: estoy manejando.I can't talk now: I'm driving.right now
  • Este año estoy viviendo con unos amigos. This year I'm living with some friends.temporary
  • Mi hermana está pidiendo una pizza.My sister is ordering a pizza.e → i

Contrasts and traps

  • Not for the future. "I'm leaving tomorrow" is Salgo mañana or Voy a salir mañana, never Estoy saliendo mañana.
  • Not with states. Tengo un carro, Sé la respuesta, Quiero un café: these verbs describe states, not actions in progress.
  • The simple present is often enough. ¿Qué haces? can mean "What are you doing?", and Vivo en Lima is fine even for a while. The progressive adds "right now, in the middle of it".
  • Ir and venir rarely go in the progressive: Ya voy (I'm coming), ¿Vienes? (Are you coming?).

If you also speak Portuguese

Brazilian estou fazendo works exactly like estoy haciendo. Watch only the forms (leyendo, durmiendo, pidiendo) and avoid gerundismo: vou estar enviando is simply voy a enviar.

Typowe błędy

Te, które uczący się naprawdę popełniają, z wyjaśnieniem każdej poprawki.

Estoy teniendo un carro nuevo.Tengo un carro nuevo.

State verbs like tener, saber or querer don't go in the progressive: Tengo un carro nuevo.
