Questions and negation
Preguntas, interrogativos y negación
Krótka odpowiedź
Yes/no questions keep the word order of a statement and change only the intonation; other questions start with an accented question word (qué, dónde, cuándo…), with any preposition first. To negate, put no right before the verb; tags like ¿no? and ¿verdad? check information.
qué: definition, qué + noun
- ¿Qué es el ceviche?
- ¿Qué idiomas hablas?
- ¿Qué estudias?
cuál es: one piece of information
- ¿Cuál es tu apellido?
- ¿Cuál es la capital de Ecuador?
- ¿Cuáles son tus libros?
¿Por qué…? why
- ¿Por qué estudias español?
- ¿Por qué no comes carne?
Porque… because
- Porque trabajo con clientes de México.
- Porque soy vegetariana.
Kluczowe formy
- Yes/no: ¿Hablas español? – intonation, no auxiliary
- qué, quién/quiénes, dónde, de dónde, adónde, cómo, cuándo, cuánto/a/os/as, cuál/cuáles, por qué
- Question words carry a tilde; porque (because) is one word without tilde
- Preposition first: ¿De dónde eres? ¿Con quién vives? ¿A qué te dedicas?
- ¿Qué + noun? (¿Qué libro?) vs ¿Cuál es…? for one of a set (¿Cuál es tu número?)
- Negation: No hablo alemán. Short answer: No, no hablo alemán.
- Tags: Eres Julián, ¿no? / ¿verdad?

What it is
Questions and negation turn single sentences into a conversation. Spanish keeps both simple: there is no helper verb like English do, a yes/no question can keep the word order of a statement, and no goes right before the verb. The work is done by intonation, by question words that always carry a written accent, and by the opening ¿.
How to form it
Yes/no questions. Say the statement with rising intonation. In writing, open with ¿ and close with ?. The subject can stay first or move after the verb:
- Hablas portugués. → ¿Hablas portugués?
- ¿Tu hermana vive en Lima? = ¿Vive tu hermana en Lima?
Questions with a question word. The question word comes first and the verb follows it straight away. A subject, if you say one, goes after the verb: ¿Dónde vive tu hermana?
| Question word | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| qué | what | ¿Qué estudias? |
| quién / quiénes | who | ¿Quién habla inglés? |
| dónde | where | ¿Dónde vives? |
| de dónde | where from | ¿De dónde eres? |
| adónde | where to | ¿Adónde viajas? |
| cómo | how | ¿Cómo te llamas? |
| cuándo | when | ¿Cuándo llegas? |
| cuánto, cuánta, cuántos, cuántas | how much, how many | ¿Cuántas personas viven aquí? |
| cuál / cuáles | which, what | ¿Cuál es tu apellido? |
| por qué | why | ¿Por qué estudias español? |
Every question word has a written accent. Without it, the same letters are other words: porque (because), que (that), como (like; also "I eat"), cuando (when, in a statement). Quién and cuál have plurals (quiénes, cuáles), and cuánto agrees with its noun: cuántos días, cuántas personas.
Prepositions go first. A question never ends in a preposition: ¿De dónde eres? (Where are you from?), ¿Con quién vives? (Who do you live with?), ¿A qué te dedicas? (What do you do?).
Negation. Put no right before the verb, after the subject if there is one: Mi hermano no trabaja los sábados. In a short answer, the first no answers and the second negates the verb: —¿Hablas alemán? —No, no hablo alemán. "Yes" is sí, with an accent: si means "if".
Tags. To check something you think is true, add ¿no? or ¿verdad?: Eres de Cali, ¿no?
When to use it
- ¿De dónde eres y dónde vives ahora?Where are you from and where do you live now?de dónde, dónde
- —¿A qué te dedicas? —Soy enfermera.—What do you do? —I'm a nurse.preposition first
- ¿Con quién vives en Montevideo?Who do you live with in Montevideo?con quién
- —¿Hablas alemán? —No, no hablo alemán.—Do you speak German? —No, I don't.no + verb
- —¿Por qué estudias portugués? —Porque viajo mucho a Brasil.—Why are you learning Portuguese? —Because I travel to Brazil a lot.por qué, porque
- ¿Qué idiomas hablas?Which languages do you speak?qué + noun
- ¿Cuál es tu número de teléfono? What's your phone number?cuál es
- Eres de Guayaquil, ¿verdad? You are from Guayaquil, right?tag
Contrasts and traps
- qué or cuál? Before a noun, use qué: ¿Qué idiomas hablas? Before es or son, cuál asks for one piece of information, such as a name, a number or a city: ¿Cuál es tu número de teléfono? ¿Qué es…? asks for a definition: ¿Qué es el ceviche? So "What's your number?" is never ¿Qué es tu número?
- por qué or porque? ¿Por qué…? asks; Porque… answers.
- dónde, de dónde, adónde: where, where from, where to. For a destination, ask ¿Adónde viajas? (also spelled a dónde).
- No do: "Do you work here?" is ¿Trabajas aquí? and "I don't work" is No trabajo.
- No stranded prepositions: never ¿Dónde eres de? or ¿Quién vives con?
If you also speak Portuguese
The question words look familiar, but check the spelling: onde → dónde, quem → quién, quando → cuándo, qual → cuál, all with an accent. "O que" is just qué, never lo que; quién has a plural; and the subject goes after the verb: ¿Dónde vives?, not ¿Dónde tú vives? Say no once, before the verb: No, no hablo inglés, not No hablo inglés no.
