The short answer
Linking words turn a list of facts into a story or an argument. At this level the key ones are então and aí (then, so), por isso (that's why), como (since, at the start of the sentence), porque (because), enquanto (while), se (if), and antes de / depois de + infinitive (before / after doing). In speech, Brazilians chain whole stories with aí… aí… aí….
How to form it
| Job | Connector | Example |
|---|---|---|
| sequence | primeiro · depois · aí / daí (speech) · então · no final | Primeiro a gente foi à praia, depois almoçou. |
| result: so, that's why | por isso · então | Perdi o ônibus, por isso cheguei atrasada. |
| cause, first in the sentence | como · já que | Como estava chovendo, a gente ficou em casa. |
| cause, after the main clause | porque | A gente ficou em casa porque estava chovendo. |
| contrast | mas · só que (speech) · mesmo assim | Eu ia sair, só que começou a chover. |
| at the same time | enquanto + verb | Enquanto eu cozinhava, ela arrumava a mesa. |
| before / after | antes de / depois de + infinitive · depois que + verb | Antes de sair, fecha a janela. · Depois que o filme acabou… |
| real condition | se + indicative | Se você está cansado, vai dormir. |
A few rules of form:
- antes de and depois de take an infinitive: antes de sair, depois de jantar. With a conjugated verb, use depois que: depois que a gente jantou.
- como (cause) opens the sentence; porque normally follows the main clause. Same facts, two orders: Como estava frio, fiquei em casa / Fiquei em casa porque estava frio.
- enquanto is followed by a conjugated verb, usually in the imperfeito for the background action: enquanto eu tomava banho.
- se for real conditions takes the indicative: Se você gosta de praia, vai adorar Maceió.
- por isso and então come after a comma or after e: Perdi o ônibus e por isso cheguei atrasado.
When to use it
- Telling what happened, step by step: Primeiro a gente foi à praia, depois almoçou no centro e no final viu o pôr do sol no Guaíba.
- Giving a reason before the fact (como, já que) or after it (porque).
- Giving a result (por isso, então): Tava muito cansada, então fui dormir cedo.
- Two things at the same time (enquanto): Enquanto eu cozinhava, a Bruna arrumava a mesa.
- Conditions that are real or general (se + present): Se chove, o trânsito para.
- Como tava chovendo, a gente ficou em casa e aí resolveu ver um filme.Since it was raining, we stayed at home, and then we decided to watch a film.como · aí
- Perdi o ônibus, por isso cheguei atrasada.I missed the bus, so I was late.por isso = so
- Enquanto eu cozinhava, a campainha tocou. While I was cooking, the doorbell rang.enquanto + imperfeito
- Depois que o show acabou, a gente foi comer. After the show ended, we went to eat.depois que + verb
- Se chove, o trânsito para.If it rains, the traffic stops.se + present

Contrasts and traps
- aí in a story means "then / and so", not "there": Aí ela me ligou — Then she called me. Daí is common in the South and in São Paulo. E aí? alone is a greeting: "What's up?"
- então = "so" (result) or "then" (next step); at the start of a turn it is a filler: Então….
- porque at the very start of a sentence is not wrong, but it sounds unfinished; Brazilians prefer Como… or Já que… there.
- depois de + conjugated verb is a classic error: depois de jantar or depois que jantei, never depois de jantei.
- enquanto is one word. Em quanto means "in how much": Em quanto tempo?
- só que (but) and aí belong to speech; in writing use mas, no entanto, em seguida.
If you speak Spanish
The system is the same as in Spanish, so the traps are words: entonces → então, mientras → enquanto, si → se, por eso → por isso, después → depois. Ahí is not aí: in a Portuguese story aí means "and then". And pois is not your filler pues: it means "because / since" in formal writing, and pois é means "right, exactly".
