What it is
Linking words turn a list of short sentences into real speech. With a handful of them you can add ideas, contrast them, give reasons and results, say what something is for and share what you think: Moro em Niterói e trabalho no Rio, então pego a barca todo dia. (I live in Niterói and work in Rio, so I take the ferry every day.)
How to form it
| means | example | |
|---|---|---|
| e | and | Moro em Niterói e trabalho no Rio. |
| mas | but | É caro, mas é bom. |
| ou | or | Café ou chá? |
| porque | because | Fico em casa porque tô doente. |
| quando | when, whenever | Quando chove, a gente pede pizza. |
| então | so | Tô com fome, então vou comer. |
| também | also, too | Eu também falo inglês. |
| para + infinitive | to, in order to | Junto dinheiro para viajar. |
| acho que · sei que | I think (that) · I know (that) | Acho que vai chover. |
Put the linking word between the two ideas and keep the normal word order after it: Fico em casa porque tô doente. Nothing moves to the end of the clause.
- e sounds like "ee" and never has an accent. With an accent, é means "is".
- mas (but) and mais (more) are different words. In speech mas often sounds like mais, but keep them apart in writing.
- porque (one word) answers por que? (two words): Por que você não vem? — Porque tô cansado.
- para + infinitive says what something is for: Junto dinheiro para viajar. In speech it shrinks to pra.
- que after acho (I think), sei (I know) or diz (says) is never dropped: Acho que vai chover. English can say "I think it’ll rain"; Portuguese can’t leave que out.

The logic is the same as in Spanish; the forms are not. Pero is mas, o is ou (in Portuguese o means "the"), y is e, entonces is então, también is também and creo que is usually acho que. Va a llover loses its a: vai chover. Above all, don’t write mais (más) when you mean mas (pero).
