The short answer

Portuguese spells "why" and "because" four ways, and the spelling depends on the job and the position. Por que (two words) asks "why": Por que você não veio? Porque (one word) gives the reason: Porque eu tava cansado. Por quê (two words, with a circumflex) is "why" at the end of a sentence or on its own: Você não veio por quê? — Por quê? O porquê is a noun, "the reason". To check something, Brazilians add a tag, above all né?: Você é de Belém, né? And to ask politely, they wrap the question in another sentence: Você sabe onde fica o banco?

How to form it

FormMeaningWhereExample
por quewhystart or middle of a questionPor que você saiu cedo?
por quêwhyend of a sentence, or on its ownVocê saiu cedo por quê?
porquebecauseintroduces the reasonPorque eu tava com sono.
o porquêthe reason (a noun)after o, um, seu…Ninguém entendeu o porquê.

Tags go at the end, after a comma: Tá frio hoje, né? (né = não é), Você vem amanhã, não é?, A gente se vê às oito, certo?, Me liga depois, tá?

Indirect questions put a question inside a sentence: Você sabe…?, Pode me dizer…?, Queria saber…, Não sei… + the question word + the rest of the question. For a yes/no question, use se (if, whether):

  • Onde fica a farmácia? → Você sabe onde fica a farmácia?
  • Que horas são? → Pode me dizer que horas são?
  • A loja abre domingo? → Você sabe se a loja abre domingo?

When to use it

  • por que in direct and indirect "why" questions: Por que o ônibus atrasou? · Não sei por que ele saiu.
  • por quê when "why" closes the sentence: Ele saiu por quê? · Não sei por quê. · Por quê?
  • porque for "because": Não fui porque tava chovendo.
  • né? in everyday speech and chat, to ask for agreement or just to keep the conversation going; não é? is the full, more careful form; certo? checks facts and plans; tá? asks "OK?" after a plan, a request or an instruction. In the Northeast you will also hear viu?: Tô indo, viu?
  • Indirect questions to sound polite with strangers, in shops and at work: O senhor sabe se esse ônibus passa no centro? · Queria saber quanto custa.
  • Por que você tá rindo? — Porque essa piada é muito boa.Why are you laughing? — Because that joke is really good.por que / porque

Contrasts and traps

  • por que or porque? If you could add motivo after it ("for what reason"), it is two words: Por que (motivo) você saiu? If it means "because", it is one word.
  • The accent only comes at the end. Por que você saiu? but Você saiu por quê? In final position the word is stressed, so it takes a circumflex, and so does the noun o porquê.
  • Inside a longer sentence, no accent either: Não sei por que ele saiu. Only when nothing follows: Não sei por quê.
  • "What" in an indirect question is o que, never que alone: Não sei o que ele quer.
  • né? is not always a question. In speech it is also a filler, like "you know": Aí, né, a gente foi embora. Keep it out of formal writing.
  • tá? or né? Tá? asks you to agree with what I propose (OK?); né? asks you to confirm what I said (right?): Te ligo amanhã, tá? · Você mora aqui, né?
  • verdade? on its own means "Really?". As a tag, Brazilians say né? or não é?.
  • In chat, pq stands for both por que and porque: pq vc não veio? — pq choveu.

If you speak Spanish

The four forms match Spanish, with two differences in the accents. ¿Por qué? at the start of a question is por que with no accent at all: Por que você não veio? The accent appears only at the end, and it is a circumflex: Você não veio por quê? Porque and el porqué (o porquê) work as in Spanish. Your tags ¿verdad? and ¿no? become né? or não é?, and si in indirect questions is se: ¿Sabes si abre el domingo? → Você sabe se abre no domingo?
