What it is

English reaches for the passive whenever the doer is unknown or unimportant. Brazilian Portuguese has a whole menu of ways to push the agent out of the picture, and each one belongs to a register. Choosing well is what makes you sound natural in a chat and credible in a report.

How to form it

When to use it

In conversation

Prefer the 3rd-person plural and the verb on its own: Me roubaram! Mudaram o horário da aula. Abriram uma padaria nova na esquina. O sinal fechou. A internet caiu. A short ser-passive is fine too (Meu celular foi roubado), but a long one with an agent sounds like the evening news: O show foi cancelado pela produtora devido às condições climáticas.

In the news

The ser-passive dominates, often with no agent at all: Dois suspeitos foram presos. A obra será concluída em março. When the agent matters, it comes with por: pelo prefeito, pela Polícia Federal.

Formal and administrative writing

Notices, contracts and academic prose prefer the se-passive and nouns: Informa-se que…, Solicita-se a presença de todos. Após a análise dos documentos, … In the norm the verb agrees with the noun: Vendem-se apartamentos. Signs often say Vende-se apartamentos; careful writers avoid it.

No agent at all

Many verbs describe a change without any agent and, in Brazilian speech, without se: quebrar, abrir, fechar, encher, esvaziar, atrasar, acabar, derreter, afundar, molhar, sujar. O copo quebrou. A reunião atrasou. O sorvete derreteu. Formal writing sometimes adds se: O vaso se quebrou.

Contrasts and traps

  • Agreement: in the ser-passive the participle agrees (as casas foram vendidas); after ter it never does (tinham vendido as casas).
  • pelo / pela: por + o = pelo: foi aprovado pelo Senado, never por o.
  • The 3rd-person plural means "someone": Me ligaram do banco = someone from the bank called me. It can be one person.
  • The English "have something done to you": Tive meu celular roubado is an anglicism. Say Roubaram meu celular.
  • Keep one register: Cancelaram o show in a message, O show foi cancelado in a news item, O cancelamento do show in a report.

Choosing in practice

The lift in your building breaks down. To a neighbour in the hall: O elevador quebrou de novo. In the residents' WhatsApp group: Já chamaram o técnico? In the notice the manager puts up: O elevador será consertado na segunda-feira. In the annual accounts: O conserto do elevador custou R$ 3 mil. Same event, four registers, four ways of leaving the agent out.

If you speak Spanish

Spanish uses se everywhere: se canceló el concierto, se vende, se rompió el vaso, se me olvidó. Brazilian speech uses it far less. Se canceló el concierto → Cancelaram o show or O show foi cancelado; se rompió el vaso → O copo quebrou; aquí se habla español → aqui a gente fala espanhol (a sign says Fala-se espanhol). Portuguese has no se me construction: se me cayó el celular → Meu celular caiu or Deixei o celular cair; se me olvidó → Esqueci. And por el, por la contract: pelo, pela.
