What it is

At C1 you met the gerund of manner and simultaneity (Llegó corriendo) and absolute participle clauses (Terminada la reunión, …). At C2 the gerund (gerundio) carries a whole subordinate clause: it can express a cause (gerundio causal), a concession (gerundio concesivo) or a condition (gerundio condicional), take its own subject (Estando yo presente…) and appear in a compound form (gerundio compuesto: Habiendo terminado…). The gerund itself never says which of these it means; the context and a few markers (aun, todavía, a negation) do. This topic also covers the gerunds that style guides reject and the handful of verbs with two participles (participios dobles: imprimido / impreso).

How to form it

MeaningGerund clauseOrdinary paraphrase
causeNo teniendo dinero, volvió a pie.Como no tenía dinero…
concessionAun sabiendo la verdad, se calló.Aunque sabía la verdad…
conditionSaliendo ahora, llegamos a tiempo.Si salimos ahora…
own subjectEstando tú delante, no se atreverán.Si tú estás delante…
earlier actionHabiendo firmado el contrato, lo celebraron.Después de firmar el contrato…
  • The compound gerund is habiendo + participle, and its action is over before the main verb: Habiendo revisado las cuentas, firmó.
  • A negation goes first: No habiendo quórum, se suspendió la sesión.
  • Pronouns attach to the end, and the gerund then needs a written accent: habiéndolo pensado, diciéndoselo.
  • Its own subject goes after the gerund: Estando ella en casa…, never Ella estando…
  • A concessive gerund needs a marker: aun (no accent: "even"), incluso, or todavía / aun así in the main clause. Without one, readers take the gerund as a cause.

Two participles. A few verbs have a regular participle and an irregular one (participio irregular):

VerbAfter haberAs an adjectiveExample
imprimirimprimido / impresoimpresoHe imprimido / impreso los documentos.
freírfreído / fritofritoYa hemos freído / frito el pescado.
proveerproveído / provistoprovistoun barco provisto de radio
elegirelegidoelectola presidenta electa
corregircorregidocorrectouna respuesta correcta
bendecir / maldecirbendecido / maldecidobendito / malditoagua bendita, una casa maldita
concluirconcluidoconclusoconcluso para sentencia (legal)
despertar / soltardespertado / soltadodespierto / sueltoEstoy despierta. El perro anda suelto.

Only imprimir, freír and proveer accept both forms after haber. Everywhere else the short form is an adjective: ha corregido, never ha correcto; ha sido bendecido, but agua bendita. Electo means elected but not yet in office (el presidente electo, the president-elect), although much of the Latin American press also writes fue electo. After haber, only elegido.

When to use it

Causal, concessive and compound gerunds belong to careful writing: reports, news, essays. The conditional gerund is everyday: Yendo por la costa, tardas menos. Photo captions and titles are the one place where a noun + gerund can stand without a main verb: La ministra de Cultura, conversando con estudiantes de música en Valparaíso.

  • No habiendo quórum, se suspendió la sesión.As there was no quorum, the session was suspended.cause, formal
  • Aun habiendo leído el contrato dos veces, no entendí la cláusula final.Even though I had read the contract twice, I did not understand the final clause.concession: aun + compound gerund
  • Yendo por la costa, tardas menos. If you go along the coast, it takes less time.condition, everyday
  • Estando todos de acuerdo, se aprobó el presupuesto.Since everyone agreed, the budget was approved.own subject after the gerund
  • Habiéndolo pensado mejor, rechazó la oferta.Having thought better of it, she turned the offer down.compound gerund + pronoun
  • La ministra de Cultura, conversando con estudiantes de música en Valparaíso.The Minister of Culture talking with music students in Valparaíso.photo caption
  • Una vez fritas, las papas se dejan escurrir sobre papel absorbente.Once fried, the potatoes are left to drain on kitchen paper.participle as an adjective

Absolute participle clauses (construcciones absolutas: Concluida la sesión, …; Una vez firmado el contrato, …) are the participle's twin of the compound gerund: the participle comes first and agrees with its noun (Firmadas las actas, …).

In Latin America you will also hear affectionate diminutive gerunds: Se fue callandito (he slipped away quietly), Vámonos corriendito. Recognise them; they are colloquial.

Contrasts and traps

  • No gerund for a later event. Huyó, siendo detenido horas después is the classic newsroom error; write Huyó y fue detenido horas después.
  • No gerund as an adjective (the "BOE gerund", nicknamed after Spain's official gazette): un decreto regulando los alquileres → un decreto que regula los alquileres; una caja conteniendo libros → una caja que contiene libros. Only hirviendo and ardiendo work as adjectives: agua hirviendo, leña ardiendo.
  • aun ≠ aún. Aun sabiéndolo (even knowing it); Aún no lo sé (still, yet).
  • Compound = before. Habiendo cenado, salimos (dinner first, then out); Cenando, conversamos (at the same time).
  • One participle per verb, apart from the three above: ha pagado, ha aceptado, ha corregido, se ha despertado.

For Portuguese speakers

The Portuguese gerund does almost everything the Spanish one does (Mesmo tendo voado tanto…), so the meanings transfer well. The forms don't always:

  • Auxiliary: tendo chegado → habiendo llegado, never teniendo llegado.
  • mesmo → aun or incluso: Mesmo sabendo a verdade → Aun sabiendo la verdad. Mismo sabiendo does not exist.
  • Subject position: Eu estando lá, ninguém briga → Estando yo allí, nadie se pelea.
  • Double participles: Portuguese has dozens (aceito, pago, ganho, gasto, entregue, limpo, salvo), and in Brazil the short forms appear even after ter: tinha pago. For these verbs Spanish has only the regular form: ha aceptado, había pagado, hemos ganado, ha gastado, ha entregado. He pago and ha aceito are among the most recognisable Brazilian errors.
  • eleito / elegido: foi eleito = fue elegido (in Latin America also fue electo), but ha electo is impossible.

A gerund cannot describe a noun like an adjective (the 'BOE gerund'). Use a relative clause: que regula.

El conductor se dio a la fuga, siendo detenido dos horas después.El conductor se dio a la fuga y fue detenido dos horas después.

A gerund cannot add a separate, later event. Use y + a finite verb.

Los socios ya habían electo a la nueva presidenta del club.Los socios ya habían elegido a la nueva presidenta del club.

After haber only elegido works. Electo is an adjective: la presidenta electa.

Cuando llegué, Andrés ya había pago la cuenta.Cuando llegué, Andrés ya había pagado la cuenta.

Spanish has only pagado. Short participles like Portuguese pago, aceito, ganho do not exist in Spanish.

Różnice regionalne

  • Diminutive gerunds (callandito, corriendito) are typical of Latin America; recognition only.
  • In much of Latin America electo also appears in the passive (fue electo diputado), especially in the press; after haber only elegido is possible.
