What it is
You need numbers for your age, phone number, prices, the time and the date. A few of them behave like grammar: uno becomes un or una before a noun, the hundreds agree with the noun, and the clock needs la or las: Son las tres.
How to form it
0–29 are single words. Watch the accents on dieciséis, veintidós, veintitrés, veintiséis.
| 0–9 | 10–19 | 20–29 |
|---|---|---|
| cero | diez | veinte |
| uno | once | veintiuno |
| dos | doce | veintidós |
| tres | trece | veintitrés |
| cuatro | catorce | veinticuatro |
| cinco | quince | veinticinco |
| seis | dieciséis | veintiséis |
| siete | diecisiete | veintisiete |
| ocho | dieciocho | veintiocho |
| nueve | diecinueve | veintinueve |
From 31, the tens join the units with y: treinta y uno, cuarenta y cinco, noventa y nueve. The tens are treinta, cuarenta, cincuenta, sesenta, setenta, ochenta, noventa.
Hundreds and thousands:
| Number | Spanish | Number | Spanish |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100 | cien / ciento | 600 | seiscientos |
| 200 | doscientos | 700 | setecientos |
| 300 | trescientos | 800 | ochocientos |
| 400 | cuatrocientos | 900 | novecientos |
| 500 | quinientos | 1000 | mil |
- cien is exactly 100: cien pesos, cien mil. From 101 it is ciento: ciento uno, ciento cincuenta.
- y only joins tens and units, never after ciento or mil: ciento uno, mil quinientos, dos mil veintiséis.
- Three hundreds are irregular: quinientos (500), setecientos (700), novecientos (900).
- Hundreds agree with the noun: doscientos pesos, doscientas personas.
- mil stands alone, never un mil: mil pesos, dos mil, diez mil. millón is a noun and takes de: un millón de habitantes, dos millones de personas.
- uno becomes un before a masculine noun and una before a feminine one, also at the end of bigger numbers: un hermano, veintiún años, treinta y una personas.
Ordinals (1st–10th): primero, segundo, tercero, cuarto, quinto, sexto, séptimo, octavo, noveno, décimo. They agree like adjectives (la primera vez), and primero and tercero drop the -o before a masculine singular noun: el primer día, el tercer piso.
The time. Ask ¿Qué hora es? and answer with ser + la / las + the hour:
| Time | Spanish |
|---|---|
| 1:00 | Es la una. |
| 3:00 | Son las tres (en punto). |
| 3:15 | Son las tres y cuarto. |
| 3:30 | Son las tres y media. |
| 3:50 | Son las cuatro menos diez. |
| 12:00 | Es mediodía. / Es medianoche. |
To say when something happens, use a la / a las: a la una, a las ocho. Add de la mañana, de la tarde or de la noche.
The date. ¿Qué día es hoy? — Hoy es jueves or Hoy es 2 de abril. A date is el + day + de + month: el 5 de mayo. The first of the month is el primero de mayo in Latin America (el uno in Spain). Days and months take lower case: lunes, martes, miércoles, jueves, viernes, sábado, domingo; enero … diciembre. Years are ordinary numbers: 2026 is dos mil veintiséis.
When to use it
- Tengo veintiún años.I am twenty-one.age: tener + años
- Son trescientos pesos. That comes to three hundred pesos.prices
- —¿Qué hora es? —Es la una y media.—What time is it? —It is half past one.es la una
- El banco abre a las nueve de la mañana. The bank opens at nine in the morning.a las + hour
- Mi cumpleaños es el 21 de marzo.My birthday is on 21 March.el + day + de + month
- Vivo en el tercer piso.I live on the third floor.tercero → tercer
Phone numbers are usually read in pairs: 55 34 21 08 → cincuenta y cinco, treinta y cuatro, veintiuno, cero ocho.
Contrasts and traps
- Es la una / Son las dos: the verb agrees with the hour. Son la una and Es las tres are both wrong.
- No article, no time: Son dos is just a number; the time is Son las dos.
- cien or ciento: cien alone or before a noun or mil; ciento before more numbers.
- veintiún años, but veintiuno alone: —¿Cuántos años tienes? —Veintiuno.
- Day before month: 5/3 is el 5 de marzo.
- On Monday = el lunes; los lunes means every Monday.
- Latin America also says un cuarto para las cinco (4:45).
If you also speak Portuguese
Most numbers look familiar, but 16–19 are one word (dieciséis, not dezesseis), there is no y after ciento or mil (ciento uno, dos mil veintiséis), the irregular hundreds are quinientos, setecientos, novecientos, and the clock needs the article: son las tres, a las tres (not às três).
