The short answer

Build word families from one root: nouns in -ção/-mento/-agem (a viagem is feminine!), people in -dor/-eiro/-ista, adjectives in -vel/-oso/-ento, abstract nouns in -dade/-eza/-ura/-ismo, and the prefixes des-, in-/im-/i- and re-.

prefixdes-rootorganizsuffix-ação
One word, three parts: prefix + root + suffix.

Masculine: -mento, -ismo

  • o pagamento
  • o casamento
  • o turismo

Feminine: -ção, -agem, -dade, -eza

  • a organização
  • a viagem

The suffix decides the gender.

Key forms

  • Verb → noun: organizar → organização (f), pagar → pagamento (m), lavar → lavagem (f)
  • People: jogador, trabalhador, padeiro, carteiro, jornalista (o/a)
  • Adjectives: lavável, reutilizável, possível · gostoso, perigoso · barulhento, ciumento

What it is

Portuguese builds big word families from one root with a small set of suffixes and prefixes. If you know organizar, you can understand organização, organizador, desorganizado and reorganizar the first time you see them. This topic covers the most productive patterns: nouns from verbs, people who do things, adjectives, abstract nouns and three common prefixes.

The aim is twofold: to guess unknown words when you read, and to produce the right derived word instead of an invented one (organizamento, perigável).

How to form it

Nouns from verbs

SuffixExamplesMeaning
-ção (f)organizar → organização, construir → construção, informar → informaçãoaction / result
-mento (m)pagar → pagamento, casar → casamento, atender → atendimentoaction / result
-agem (f)lavar → lavagem, viajar → viagem, passar → passagemaction, service

-ção is the most common: -ar verbs give -ação. The plural is -ções: organizações, informações. Nouns in -ção and -agem are feminine; nouns in -mento are masculine. A viagem is spelled with g, although viajar has a j.

People who do things

SuffixExamples
-dor / -dorajogar → jogador, trabalhar → trabalhador, vender → vendedor
-eiro / -eirapão → padeiro, carta → carteiro, cozinha → cozinheiro, jornal → jornaleiro
-ista (o/a)jornal → jornalista, dente → dentista, turismo → turista

-dor comes from verbs, -eiro mostly from nouns (often trades and sellers), -ista from nouns and has one form for both genders: o jornalista, a jornalista. Some stems are old: pão → padeiro, padaria.

Quick drill

A (organizar) da festa ficou por conta da Thaís, que adora planejar tudo.

Thaís, who loves planning everything, was in charge of organising the party.

Adjectives

SuffixMeaningExamples
-velcan be …-edlavar → lavável, reutilizar → reutilizável, ler → legível
-oso / -osafull ofgosto → gostoso, perigo → perigoso, carinho → carinhoso
-ento / -entawith a lot ofbarulho → barulhento, ciúme → ciumento, poeira → poeirento

-vel follows the verb: -ar → -ável, -er/-ir → -ível, always with an accent; plural -veis (laváveis, possíveis). -oso is written with s although it sounds like z; in the plural the o opens: gostosos.

Abstract nouns

SuffixExamples
-dade (f)feliz → felicidade, tranquilo → tranquilidade, possível → possibilidade
-eza (f)belo → beleza, triste → tristeza, limpo → limpeza
-ura (f)alto → altura, largo → largura, doce → doçura
-ismo (m)turista → turismo, jornal → jornalismo, racista → racismo

All of these are feminine except -ismo: a felicidade, a beleza, a altura, o turismo. Spelling may shift: feliz → felicidade.

Prefixes

PrefixMeaningExamples
des-undo, oppositeligar → desligar, fazer → desfazer, organizado → desorganizado
in- / im- / i-notfeliz → infeliz, possível → impossível, legal → ilegal, regular → irregular
re-againfazer → refazer, ler → reler, abrir → reabrir

In- becomes im- before p and b, and i- before l and r. Verbs with prefixes conjugate like the base verb: refiz, desfez.

Where you’ll meet it

Derived nouns are everywhere in writing: headlines (Prefeitura anuncia construção de ponte), notices (O pagamento será feito na sexta), product labels (reutilizável, lavável). Speech prefers verbs (a gente vai pagar na sexta), but the everyday words of every family are spoken too: viagem, mensagem, gostoso, barulhento, desligar.

When you meet a new word while reading, strip it down. Imprevisível: im- (not) + previs- (from prever, to foresee) + -ível (can be) = "unpredictable". Desempregado: des- + emprego + -ado = "unemployed". Reabertura: re- + abert- + -ura = "reopening". Most of the time the parts give you the meaning before you reach for a dictionary.

Contrasts and traps

  • Not every suffix fits every root. Organização, not organizamento; perigoso, not perigável; barulhento, not barulhoso. Learn the derived word, not just the rule.
  • Same root, different meaning. Trabalhador (hard-working person) vs trabalhoso (a lot of work). Jornalista (writes the news) vs jornaleiro (sells papers). Amável (kind) vs amoroso (loving).
  • Gender follows the suffix. -ção, -agem, -dade, -eza, -ura → feminine; -mento, -ismo → masculine.
  • Accents. -ável and -ível always carry one: confortável, impossível.
  • des- vs in-. Verbs and participles take des- (desligar, desorganizado); many adjectives take in- (infeliz, incapaz).

If you speak Spanish

Most suffixes have a Spanish twin, which makes this topic easy to read and easy to get slightly wrong:

SpanishPortugueseExamples
-ción-çãocanción → canção, nación → nação
-sión / -ión-são / -iãodecisión → decisão, opinión → opinião
-ón-ãocorazón → coração, razón → razão
-dad-dadeciudad → cidade, verdad → verdade
-ble-velamable → amável, posible → possível
-miento-mentopensamiento → pensamento, sentimiento → sentimento
-aje (m)-agem (f)el viaje → a viagem, el mensaje → a mensagem
-ero-eirococinero → cozinheiro, cartero → carteiro

The big trap is gender: el viaje, el mensaje, el garaje, el paisaje are all feminine in Portuguese: a viagem, a mensagem, a garagem, a paisagem. Also watch words that look derived but differ: periodista → jornalista, panadero → padeiro, apagar la tele → desligar a TV.
