What it is

In the voz passiva (passive voice), the thing that undergoes the action becomes the subject: A prefeitura construiu a ponte (active) → A ponte foi construída pela prefeitura (passive). You choose it when the result matters more than who did it, or when you don’t know or don’t want to say who did it: O show foi cancelado. Meu celular foi roubado.

Portuguese has three close relatives built with a participle (pt-g-047): ser + participle for the action (the passive proper), estar + participle for the state that results, and ficar + participle for the change into that state. This topic covers all three.

How to form it

ser in any tense + participle + (optionally) por + the agent. The tense of ser is the tense of the sentence.

Tense of serExample
presenteO lixo é coletado às terças.
pretérito perfeitoA ponte foi construída em 2010.
imperfeitoAntigamente, as cartas eram escritas à mão.
futuroOs resultados serão divulgados amanhã. / vão ser divulgados
presente do subjuntivoÉ importante que o formulário seja preenchido.
estar sendoA ponte está sendo construída.

The participle agrees

With ser, estar and ficar, the participle behaves like an adjective: it agrees in gender and number with the subject.

SubjectPassive
o prédiofoi construído
a pontefoi construída
os prédiosforam construídos
as pontesforam construídas

Compare the compound tenses with ter, where the participle never changes: A prefeitura tem construído muitas pontes (pt-g-063). The irregular participles you already know work the same way and agree too: feito, dito, escrito, visto, posto, aberto, coberto, descoberto: As portas foram abertas. A carta foi escrita. Participles in -uído carry an accent: construído, destruído, incluído.

The agent: por, pelo, pela

Por contracts with the definite article. Before a name, an indefinite article or a bare noun it stays por: escrito por Clarice Lispector, encontrados por um vizinho.

por + articleContractionExample
por + opelopelo noivo
por + apelapela diretoria
por + ospelospelos vizinhos
por + aspelaspelas crianças

Kurze Übung

1 / 4

Todas as casas da vila foram (vender) em menos de um mês.

All the houses in the village were sold in less than a month.

When to use it

  • News, notices and official texts. Dois suspeitos foram vistos perto da rodoviária. As inscrições serão abertas na segunda-feira. O Teatro Amazonas foi inaugurado em 1896.
  • When the agent is unknown or unimportant. Meu celular foi roubado. A padaria foi assaltada duas vezes.
  • estar + participle: the result you can see now. A loja está fechada. A mesa já está posta. Quando eu cheguei, a porta estava aberta.
  • ficar + participle: getting into a state. Depois do temporal, a rua ficou alagada. As meninas ficaram preocupadas. O bolo ficou queimado.

What people actually say

In everyday conversation, Brazilians use the ser passive much less than in writing. They prefer the active voice, very often with an unnamed "they": the verb in the 3rd-person plural with no subject. Venderam a casa da esquina rather than A casa da esquina foi vendida; Roubaram meu celular rather than Meu celular foi roubado. Both are correct; the choice is about register. The passive with se (Vende-se casa) comes later, in pt-g-073.

Contrasts and traps

  • ser vs estar. A loja foi fechada às seis (someone closed it at six: the action) vs A loja está fechada (it’s closed: the state). A date or an agent usually means ser.
  • estar vs ficar. A rua está alagada (it is flooded now) vs A rua ficou alagada (it got flooded). Ficar is also the verb for feelings that start: ficou emocionado, ficou assustada.
  • Agreement. As fotos foram tiradas, not tirado. Check the noun’s gender: a ponte is feminine, o lixo masculine, and a criança is always feminine, even for a boy.
  • por + article. pela diretoria, pelos vizinhos; never por a, por os.
  • ter vs ser. A loja tem vendido muito (active, participle unchanged) vs Os produtos foram vendidos (passive, participle agrees).

If you speak Spanish

Spanish and Portuguese build this passive the same way: fue construido por = foi construído por. The traps are small but constant:

  • por + article always contracts: por la → pela, por el → pelo, por los → pelos.
  • Some genders change: el puente → a ponte (construída), la leche → o leite, el viaje → a viagem.
  • Accent on -uído: construido → construído.
  • quedar → ficar: quedó inundada → ficou alagada.
  • Where Spanish says se vendieron, Brazilians write foram vendidos and say venderam.
