What it is
Formal Spanish packs whole clauses into an infinitive, a participle or a gerund. Cuando terminó la reunión becomes Terminada la reunión; Como no teníamos noticias becomes Al no tener noticias. These compact clauses are everywhere in news, reports and academic prose, and they make your writing tighter. Two uses of the gerund, however, are considered incorrect and are worth avoiding.
How to form it
| Construction | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| al + infinitive | when; because (often with no) | Al llegar, vi la nota. Al no tener noticias, llamamos. |
| nada más + infinitive | as soon as | Nada más llegar, se fue a dormir. |
| tras + infinitive | after (formal) | Tras analizar los datos, el equipo concluyó… |
| haber + participle (compound infinitive) | a completed action | Siento no haberte llamado. Después de haber cenado… |
| participle + noun (absolute) | once …, after … | Terminada la reunión, … Una vez firmado el contrato, … |
| gerund | manner, simultaneity, cause | Llegó corriendo. Siendo tan tarde, nos fuimos. |
The infinitive and the gerund never change form; pronouns go on the end (al verla, habiéndolo dicho, Siento no haberte llamado). The absolute participle agrees with its noun: terminada la reunión, firmados los contratos.
When to use it
al, nada más, tras + infinitive
al + infinitive means "when" or, especially with no, "because": Al no tener noticias suyas, decidimos llamar a la policía. nada más + infinitive means "as soon as": Nada más llegar al hotel, se fue a dormir. tras + infinitive is a formal "after": Tras analizar los datos, el equipo llegó a una conclusión. The infinitive can have its own subject, placed after it: Al salir el sol, empezamos a subir.
The compound infinitive
haber + participle refers to an action completed before the main verb: Gracias por haber venido. Después de haber cenado, salimos a caminar. With a pronoun, attach it to haber: Siento no haberte llamado.
Absolute participle clauses
A participle placed before its noun, separated by a comma, summarises a finished event that frames the main clause: Terminada la reunión, los directivos dieron una rueda de prensa. Una vez firmado el contrato, no hay vuelta atrás. Fixed formulas include dicho esto (that said) and visto lo visto (in view of what happened).
The gerund: what it can do
The gerund works well for manner (Llegó corriendo), simultaneity (Caminando por el centro, encontré una librería) and cause (Siendo tan tarde, preferimos tomar un taxi).
The gerund: what to avoid
Two uses are common in bureaucratic and press language but considered incorrect:
- *Recibió un paquete conteniendo tres libros.Use a relative clause: un paquete que contenía tres libros.adjectival gerund
- *Chocó con un camión, muriendo horas después.Use y + a finite verb: y murió horas después.gerund of a later event
A gerund cannot describe a noun like an adjective (except hirviendo and ardiendo: agua hirviendo), and it cannot express something that happens after the main verb.
Contrasts and traps
- The participle agrees. Terminada la reunión, Aprobados los presupuestos.
- después de + infinitive, not participle. Después de cenar or de haber cenado, never después de cenado.
- Pronouns go on haber. Siento no haberte llamado, not no te haber llamado.
- The subject of al + infinitive follows it. Al llegar mis padres, not Al mis padres llegar.
- No adjectival gerund. una caja que contiene, una ley que regula.
If you speak Portuguese
Ao chegar, terminada a reunião, depois de ter jantado and the gerund of manner transfer directly. The difference is the personal infinitive: Portuguese conjugates the infinitive (ao chegarmos, antes de saírem), Spanish never does. Use the plain infinitive, adding the subject if needed (al llegar nosotros), or switch to a finite clause: antes de que salgan. Watch pronoun position too: Portuguese por não te ter ligado becomes por no haberte llamado, with the pronoun on haber.
