Past unreal conditions: pluperfect subjunctive and conditional perfect

Condicionales irreales de pasado: pluscuamperfecto de subjuntivo y condicional compuesto

Die kurze Antwort

Conditions contrary to past facts use si + pluperfect subjunctive with a conditional perfect (or hubiera + participle). Mixed patterns link a past condition to a present result. The same forms express regret and reproach.

Si hubiera estudiado más… (no estudié)…ahora tendría un trabajo mejor.jetzt
Past condition, present result (mixed)

Now: si + imperfect subjunctive → conditional

  • Si tuviera tiempo, iría.
  • Si lo supiera, te lo diría.

Then: si + pluperfect subjunctive → conditional perfect / hubiera

Wichtige Formen

  • hubiera / hubiese + participle; habría + participle
  • Past unreal: Si hubiera sabido, te habría llamado / te hubiera llamado.
  • Mixed: Si hubiera estudiado, ahora tendría un buen trabajo.
  • Regret: Ojalá no hubiera dicho eso. ¡Quién lo hubiera dicho!
  • Reproach: Habrías podido avisarme. No deberías haberlo hecho.

What it is

The previous topic imagined a different present: Si tuviera tiempo, iría. This one looks back at a past that can no longer change. Si hubiera sabido que estabas enfermo, te habría llamado: I didn't know, so I didn't call. Spanish builds these condicionales irreales de pasado with the pluperfect subjunctive (pluscuamperfecto de subjuntivo) in the si clause and the conditional perfect (condicional compuesto) in the result. The same forms carry regret (Ojalá no hubiera dicho eso) and reproach (Habrías podido avisarme).

How to form it

Both tenses are compound: a form of haber plus the participle (hablado, comido, vivido, and the irregular ones: hecho, dicho, visto, puesto, escrito, vuelto, roto, abierto). The participle never changes its ending.

PersonPluperfect subjunctive (si clause)Conditional perfect (result)

túhubieras / hubieses habladohabrías hablado
él / ella / ustedhubiera / hubiese habladohabría hablado
nosotroshubiéramos / hubiésemos habladohabríamos hablado
ellos / ellas / ustedeshubieran / hubiesen habladohabrían hablado
vosotros (es-ES)hubierais / hubieseis habladohabríais hablado

The si clause takes hubiera or hubiese + participle; the result takes habría + participle. In the result, Spanish also accepts hubiera (and, less often, hubiese): te habría llamado and te hubiera llamado are both standard, and hubiera is very common in Latin American speech. What never goes after si is habría.

You can also mix times. A past condition can have a result now (Si hubiera estudiado más, ahora tendría un trabajo mejor), and a permanent condition can explain a past result (Si no fuera tan despistada, no habría dejado las llaves en el taxi). Choose each half by its own time.

When to use it

Compare Ojalá no haya dicho eso: you don't know yet whether she said it.
  • Reproach: Habrías podido pedirme ayuda. No deberías haberlo hecho. In Latin America, hubieras + participle on its own is an everyday reproach: ¡Me hubieras dicho que venías! ("You should have told me you were coming!")
  • Surprise: ¡Quién lo hubiera dicho! ("Who would have thought it!")
  • Si me hubieras avisado, te hubiera guardado un lugar. If you'd let me know, I'd have saved you a seat.hubiera in the result
If I'd studied harder, I'd have a better job now.past condition, present result
  • Habrías podido pedirme ayuda. You could have asked me for help.reproach
  • ¡Quién lo hubiera dicho! El equipo más pequeño ganó el torneo.Who would have thought it! The smallest team won the tournament.surprise

Contrasts and traps

  • Never habría after si. ✗ Si habría sabido… is the past twin of ✗ si tendría. After si (if), use hubiera or hubiese.
  • Not the pluperfect indicative. English If I had known and French Si j'avais su push learners towards ✗ Si había sabido. Spanish needs the subjunctive: Si hubiera sabido. In the result, ✗ te había llamado is wrong too: te habría llamado or te hubiera llamado.
  • Simple or compound? Match the time: Si tuviera dinero, viajaría (now) vs Si hubiera tenido dinero, habría viajado (back then). With ahora, hoy or ya in the result, use the simple conditional: ✗ ahora habría tenido → ahora tendría.
  • Haber, never tener. The auxiliary is always haber: ✗ si tuviera sabido.
  • Irregular participles. ✗ hubiera hacido, ✗ escribido, ✗ ponido → hecho, escrito, puesto.

If you speak Portuguese

The match is almost perfect: Se eu tivesse sabido, teria ligado → Si hubiera sabido, habría llamado. Tivesse + participle = hubiera + participle; teria + participle = habría + participle. The one big trap is the auxiliary: Spanish uses haber, never tener.

Typische Fehler

Never the conditional after si: the condition takes the pluperfect subjunctive, hubiera sabido.

Si hubiera sabido, te había llamado.Si hubiera sabido, te habría llamado.

The result takes the conditional perfect (habría llamado) or hubiera llamado, not the pluperfect indicative.

When the result is about now (ahora), use the simple conditional: tendría.

Ojalá no habría dicho eso.Ojalá no hubiera dicho eso.

Regret about the past: ojalá + pluperfect subjunctive, never the conditional.

Si había sabido, te habría llamado.Si hubiera sabido, te habría llamado.

English had known and French avais su are indicative, but Spanish needs the subjunctive here: hubiera sabido.

Typisch für Menschen, die Englisch, Französisch sprechen

Regionale Unterschiede

  • Both habría and hubiera are standard in the main clause. Latin American speech also uses present or imperfect indicative in these clauses (Si hubiera estado yo, no te pasa nada): C2 recognition (es-g-100, es-g-107).
