Affirmative imperative

Imperativo afirmativo

La réponse courte

Affirmative commands for tú, usted and ustedes give instructions and directions, invite and advise. The tú form is usually the él form of the present (habla, come); eight verbs have short forms (di, haz, pon, sal, ten, ven, ve, sé). Pronouns attach to the end: siéntate, dímelo.

What it is

The imperative gives instructions, directions, invitations and advice: Sigue derecho. Pasa. Toma agua. Spanish has a different form for each "you": tú (a friend), usted (formal) and ustedes (more than one person).

How to form it

tú: use the él/ella form of the present: habla, come, escribe. Stem changes stay: cierra, duerme, pide.

usted / ustedes: take the yo form of the present, drop the -o and switch the vowel: -ar verbs take -e / -en, -er and -ir verbs take -a / -an: hablo → hable, hablen; tengo → tenga, tengan.

Eight short tú forms: decir → di, hacer → haz, poner → pon, salir → sal, tener → ten, venir → ven, ir → ve, ser → sé.

Irregular usted forms: ir → vaya, ser → sea, dar → dé, estar → esté, saber → sepa. The spelling keeps the sound: buscar → busque, llegar → llegue, empezar → empiece.

Pronouns attach to the end, and the verb often needs a written accent to keep its stress: Siéntate. Cómpralo. Dímelo. Siéntese, por favor. One-syllable forms with a single pronoun don't: dime, hazlo, ponte.

When to use it

  • Directions: Sigue derecho dos cuadras y dobla a la derecha.
  • Instructions: Abre la aplicación y escribe tu contraseña.
  • Invitations and offers: Pasa, siéntate. Ven el sábado.
  • Advice: Toma mucha agua y descansa.
  • Sigue derecho y dobla a la derecha.Go straight and turn right.tú
  • Pase, por favor, y siéntese aquí.Come in, please, and sit down here.usted
  • ¿La sal? Pásamela, por favor. The salt? Pass it to me, please.pronouns on the end

Contrasts and traps

  • Usted forms are polite: with a friend, say ven, haz, di, not venga, haga, diga.
  • In Argentina, Uruguay and much of Central America people use vos: vení, decí, andá. In Spain the informal plural is vosotros: venid, sentaos.
  • A bare command can sound abrupt: add por favor, or ask: ¿Me pasas la sal?
  • Negative commands are different (no vengas); they come at B1.

If you also speak Portuguese

Brazilian você commands (Venha, Faça, Diga) look like Spanish usted forms (Venga, Haga, Diga), which sound formal. With a friend, use tú: Ven, Haz, Di. And the pronoun moves to the end: Me dá → Dame, Me passa o sal → Pásame la sal.
