What it is

Many everyday sentences have two verbs: one says what you want, can, prefer, need or know how to do, and an infinitive names the action: Quiero comprar unos zapatos (I want to buy some shoes). The first verb is conjugated; the second stays in the infinitive, with nothing in between. Five verbs work this way at A1: querer, poder, preferir, necesitar and saber. Two chunks complete the set: me gustaría + infinitive (I'd like to) and para + infinitive (in order to).

How to form it

túquierespuedesprefieresnecesitassabes
él / ella / ustedquierepuedeprefierenecesitasabe
nosotros / nosotrasqueremospodemospreferimosnecesitamossabemos
ellos / ellas / ustedesquierenpuedenprefierennecesitansaben
  • Only the first verb is conjugated: Queremos salir, never queremos salimos.
  • No preposition: English "to" has no Spanish word here: Necesito comprar, Sé nadar.
  • No goes before the first verb: No puedo pagar con tarjeta.
  • A pronoun goes before the first verb or on the end of the infinitive, never between them: Me quiero probar este suéter = Quiero probarme este suéter.
  • me gustaría works like gustar: me / te / le / nos / les gustaría + infinitive.
  • para + infinitive gives the purpose: Trabajo los sábados para pagar mis clases.

Querer, poder and preferir are stem-changing verbs; necesitar is regular; saber is irregular only in the yo form: sé, with an accent.

When to use it

  • Wishes: Quiero ver los zapatos negros. With me gustaría, the same wish sounds softer.
  • Requests: ¿Puedes…? to a friend, ¿Puede…? to a shop assistant or a stranger.
  • Permission: ¿Puedo pagar con tarjeta?
  • Possibility and circumstances: Hoy no puedo salir: tengo que trabajar.
  • Skills: ¿Sabes cocinar?
  • Needs and preferences: Necesito un regalo. Prefiero pagar en efectivo.
  • Me gustaría probarme el vestido rojo, por favor.I'd like to try on the red dress, please.polite wish
  • ¿Puedo pagar con tarjeta?Can I pay by card?permission
  • Señora, ¿puede repetir el precio?Excuse me, could you repeat the price?request, usted
  • Mi hijo tiene cinco años y ya sabe leer.My son is five and can already read.a learned skill
  • Necesitamos comprar pan y leche. We need to buy bread and milk.need
  • —¿Con tarjeta? —No, prefiero pagar en efectivo.—By card? —No, I prefer to pay in cash.preference

Contrasts and traps

  • poder or saber? English "can" splits in two. saber + infinitive is a skill you have learned: Sé nadar. poder is about circumstances or permission: Hoy no puedo nadar: la piscina está cerrada. For a skill you never learned, say No sé nadar, not No puedo nadar.
  • quiero or me gustaría? Both work in a shop. Quiero is direct; me gustaría is softer, like "I'd like".
  • tener que or necesitar? Tengo que trabajar is an obligation; Necesito descansar is a need. Necesitar never takes que: necesito estudiar.
  • ¿Puedes…? or ¿Puede…? Match the register: tú with friends, usted with a shop assistant you don't know.

If you also speak Portuguese

It works as in Portuguese, but watch the diphthongs (quero → quiero, posso → puedo, prefiro → prefiero), say necesito, not preciso, and drop the de: gostaria de ir → me gustaría ir.
