The short answer
Many adjectives change meaning with ser, estar or ficar: ser verde (green) / estar verde (unripe); ser vivo (lively) / estar vivo (alive); ser morto (be killed) / estar morto (be dead); ficar ótimo (turn out great).

estar: state now

- Ela está doente.
- O João está vivo.
estar: state

Key forms
- ser verde / estar verde (unripe) · ser vivo (lively, sharp) / estar vivo (alive)
- ser doente (chronically ill) / estar doente (sick now) · ser calado (quiet person) / estar calado (silent now)
- ser morto (be killed, passive) / estar morto (be dead)
- ser bom / estar bom (fine, tasty) / ficar bom (recover; turn out well)
- ficar + adjective = become/turn out: ficou pronto, ficou rico, ficou ótimo
What it is
You know the basic rule: ser for what something is, estar for its current state, ficar for a change. With many adjectives the choice changes the meaning, not just the nuance: A banana é verde (a green variety) / A banana está verde (it's unripe). Ele é vivo (he's sharp) / Ele está vivo (he's alive). And ficar + adjective means "become" or "turn out": O bolo ficou ótimo.
How to form it
| Adjective | ser + adjective | estar + adjective |
|---|---|---|
| verde | green (colour, variety) | unripe |
| vivo | lively, sharp | alive |
| doente | chronically ill; ser doente por = be crazy about | sick (now) |
| calado | a quiet person | silent (right now) |
| bom | good (quality, person) | fine, well; tasty (food) |
| chato | boring, annoying (person) | being annoying; dull (situation) |
| esperto | clever, smart | alert (also ficar esperto = watch out) |
| interessado | self-interested | interested |
| aberto / fechado | open-minded / reserved | open / closed |
| feio | ugly | looking bad: A coisa tá feia. |
| ruim | bad (quality, person) | unwell; (food) gone off |
Ficar + adjective describes the change or the result: ficou pronto (got ready), ficou rico (got rich), ficou bravo (got angry), fiquei feliz (I was pleased), ficou caro (ended up expensive), ficou ótimo (turned out great). Ficar bom means "to recover" or "to turn out well", and ficar bem / mal em alguém means "to suit / not suit someone".
When to use it
ser: what it is like, by nature or category
O João é calado — quiet by temperament. Ela é doente por futebol — she's crazy about football. Esse cara é chato — he's a bore.
estar: the state right now
O João está calado hoje — something must be bothering him. A sopa está boa — it tastes good. Não vou sair, estou meio ruim — I'm feeling unwell.
ficar: the change, the result
Quando soube da notícia, ele ficou calado (he fell silent). O bolo ficou ótimo. Ele ficou bom da gripe (he got over the flu). Essa cor fica bem em você (that colour suits you).
ser morto vs estar morto
With an agent or an event, ser + participle is a passive: O suspeito foi morto num confronto com a polícia (was killed). Estar morto is the state: Quando a ambulância chegou, ele já estava morto. The same goes for a loja foi fechada (was closed down) vs a loja estava fechada (was closed).
Contrasts and traps
- Ele é bom (a good person, or good at something) / Ele está bom (he's well again) / Ele ficou bom (he got better).
- Tasting food: A comida está ótima, not é ótima.
- Fica esperto! means "Watch out!", not "Become clever!"
- A coisa tá feia means "things look bad", not "the thing is ugly".
- Ficar + place is location, not change: O banco fica na esquina.
If you speak Spanish
The system is close to Spanish, but several words are traps:
- ser listo (clever) → ser esperto; estar listo (ready) → estar pronto. Portuguese pronto means "ready", not "soon".
- estar rico (tasty) → estar gostoso / bom / delicioso. In Portuguese estar rico means "to be rich". And never call a person gostoso / gostosa: it is sexual slang.
- estar aburrido (bored) → estar entediado; aborrecido means "annoyed, upset".
- ponerse, volverse, quedarse + adjective → ficar: se puso rojo → ficou vermelho; se quedó callado → ficou calado; se volvió loco → ficou louco.
- estar embarazada → estar grávida; embaraçada means "embarrassed".
