Diese Erklärung gibt es noch nicht auf Deutsch, deshalb siehst du sie auf Englisch.

What it is

The basic order of Portuguese is subject–verb–object, but formal and expressive texts move words around for focus, emphasis and cohesion. Journalists open with the verb to present news (Surgiram novas dúvidas), columnists front a judgment (Grande foi a surpresa), essays balance ideas with correlatives (não só… como também). At C1 you should read these orders without effort and use a few of them deliberately, which is also what the Celpe-Bras advanced level rewards.

Verb before subject with presentational verbs

Verbs that introduce something new to the scene, such as surgir, aparecer, chegar, faltar, existir, acontecer, ocorrer, começar, restar, sobrar, naturally come before their subject: Surgiram novas dúvidas. Chegou a encomenda. Faltam recursos. This order is normal in speech too. The verb still agrees with the subject that follows it: Surgiram, not Surgiu.

Fronting for emphasis

Putting a predicate or adverb first highlights it. The verb follows immediately, with no extra auxiliary:

EmphaticNeutral
Grande foi a surpresa quando…A surpresa foi grande quando…
Tão difícil era a prova que…A prova era tão difícil que…
Raros são os casos em que…Os casos em que… são raros.
Pouco se sabe sobre…Sabe-se pouco sobre…
Muito se discutiu, pouco se fez.Discutiu-se muito, fez-se pouco.

Correlatives

CorrelativeMeaningExample

tanto … quanto / comoboth … andTanto os alunos quanto os professores aprovaram a mudança.
quanto mais … mais / menosthe more … the more / lessQuanto mais leio, menos entendo.
nem … nemneither … norNem o diretor nem a vice compareceram.
ora … orasometimes … sometimesOra chove, ora faz sol.
  • After não só the normal order stays: Não só os preços subiram — no inversion as in English.
  • Tanto … quanto and nem … nem joining two subjects take a plural verb.
  • Quanto mais … mais has no articles: never o quanto mais.

mal = "as soon as"

Mal cheguei, começou a chover means "I had hardly arrived when it started to rain". It is formal and literary; speech prefers Assim que cheguei… or Nem bem cheguei e já…

Clefts: É … que, Foi … quem

Clefts put one element in the spotlight:

  • Foi em Ouro Preto que eles se conheceram. (not somewhere else)
  • É a Ana que decide. / Quem decide é a Ana.
  • O que eu quero é descansar.

In the norm, ser agrees with a focused pronoun: Fomos nós que pedimos, Foram eles que reclamaram. The invariable é que is also correct: Nós é que pedimos.

Quote inversion

After direct speech, the reporting verb comes before its subject: — Não vou — disse ela. / «A situação é grave», afirmou o ministro.

Fronting in conversation

Speech has its own emphatic order: the topic comes first, followed by a short pause, and the rest of the sentence comments on it: Esse filme, eu já vi. / Dinheiro, a gente dá um jeito. / Feijoada, eu só como no sábado. Brazilian Portuguese uses this topic–comment structure all the time in conversation. In formal writing it sounds loose; prefer the clefts and fronted predicates above.

In context

Raras foram as vezes em que a cidade viu tanta gente na rua. Não só os moradores compareceram, como também vieram caravanas de todo o estado. Mal começou o show, a chuva apertou — e ninguém arredou o pé.

Fronted predicate, correlative and mal: three emphatic orders that make the paragraph read like a good crônica or news feature.

Contrasts and traps

  • Agreement with the postposed subject: Surgiu novas dúvidas ✗ → Surgiram.
  • No English-style inversion: Nunca tinha eu visto sounds archaic; write Nunca tinha visto.
  • Plural with correlatives: Tanto o diretor quanto a vice compareceram.
  • Don't overdo it: inversion in every sentence sounds pompous. Use it where something deserves emphasis.

If you speak Spanish

Spanish word order is freer still, so presentational VS transfers well: Llegaron los informes → Chegaram os relatórios. Watch three details. No solo… sino también becomes não só… como também or mas também, never senão também. Cuanto más… más is quanto mais… mais, as you'd expect. And Spanish apenas llegué ("as soon as I arrived") is mal cheguei or assim que cheguei: in Brazil apenas almost always means "only".
