What it is
By C1 you already handle que, quien, el que and lo que. Formal Spanish adds four more relatives, typical of reports, essays, the press and careful speech:
- el cual (la cual, los cuales, las cuales): "which, who", mainly after a preposition;
- lo cual: "which", referring back to a whole idea;
- cuyo (cuya, cuyos, cuyas): "whose";
- cuanto (cuanta, cuantos, cuantas): "everything that, as many as".
You need to recognise all four and to use the first three in your own writing.
How to form it
| Relative | Agrees with | Main use | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| el cual · la cual · los cuales · las cuales | the noun it refers back to | after a preposition; between commas | la razón por la cual me fui |
| lo cual (= lo que) | nothing: it is neuter | a comment on the whole previous clause | Llegó tarde, lo cual molestó a todos. |
| cuyo · cuya · cuyos · cuyas | the possessed noun that follows | “whose” | la autora cuyas novelas leí |
| cuanto · cuanta · cuantos · cuantas | the noun it quantifies | “everything that, as many as” | Haré cuanto pueda. |
el cual always carries the article, and the article agrees with the antecedent: el edificio en el cual…, las cartas sin las cuales…. With a and de the usual contractions apply: al cual, del cual.
cuyo works like the possessive su moved to the start of the clause. It agrees with the noun that follows it, takes no article and ignores the owner's gender: el pintor cuyas obras…, la pintora cuyos cuadros….
When to use it
After prepositions
After short prepositions (a, con, de, en, por, para, sin) both el que and el cual work. After longer prepositions (según, durante, mediante, hacia, sobre, entre, contra) and compound ones (a pesar de, gracias a, frente a, a través de, en virtud de), el cual is the natural choice:
- la empresa para la cual trabajothe company I work forpara la que is just as good
- los motivos por los cuales dimitióthe reasons why she resignedformal
- el árbol bajo el cual nos sentamosthe tree we sat under
- un acuerdo en virtud del cual…an agreement under which…compound preposition: el cual
Between commas
In a non-defining clause que is the everyday choice, and el cual adds precision when two nouns compete: Hablé con la hermana de Mario, la cual vive en Quito (the sister lives there, not Mario). Without commas and without a preposition, el cual is impossible: la chica que conocí, never la chica la cual conocí.
A whole idea as antecedent: lo cual
To comment on everything said before, use the neuter lo cual or lo que: El tren salió con una hora de retraso, lo cual nos obligó a cambiar de planes. In conversation you will also hear cosa que. Never el cual here: it would point to a noun. And lo cual needs that antecedent; with nothing before it, only lo que works (No entiendo lo que dices).
cuyo: "whose"
cuyo links an owner and what it owns, or a whole and its part: un barrio cuyas calles…, una ley cuyo objetivo…. It is common in writing and rare in conversation, where people rephrase (el chico ese, el del papá médico). The casual que su (el chico que su padre…) is non-standard: keep it out of your writing.
cuanto: "everything that"
cuanto is formal and literary: Le contó cuanto sabía (everything she knew). As a determiner it agrees: Puedes llevarte cuantos libros quieras. Todo cuanto is an emphatic variant. Everyday Spanish says todo lo que / todos los que.
Free relatives
quien and el que without an antecedent mean "whoever, the one who": Quien mucho abarca, poco aprieta. El que avisa no es traidor. Proverbs love them.
Contrasts and traps
- cuyo agrees with what is owned. la escritora cuyos libros, not cuya libros: libros decides.
- No article after cuyo. el país cuyo presidente, never cuyo el presidente.
- cuyo is only possessive. It is not a smart-sounding que: el libro cuyo leí is wrong; say el libro que leí.
If you speak Portuguese
Good news: o qual and cujo behave almost exactly like el cual and cuyo, so trust your instinct: pelo qual → por el cual, cujos livros → cuyos libros. Watch three things. The colloquial Brazilian o menino que o pai dele é médico has no place in written Spanish: write el niño cuyo padre es médico. The cujo o slip has a Spanish twin, cuyo el, and both are wrong. And your neuter o que becomes lo que / lo cual, with an obligatory lo: Chegou tarde, o que me irritou → Llegó tarde, lo cual me molestó.
