What it is

Linking words turn a list of short sentences into real speech. With a handful of them you can add ideas, contrast them, give reasons and results, say what something is for and share what you think: Moro em Niterói e trabalho no Rio, então pego a barca todo dia. (I live in Niterói and work in Rio, so I take the ferry every day.)

How to form it

Put the linking word between the two ideas and keep the normal word order after it: Fico em casa porque tô doente. Nothing moves to the end of the clause.

  • e sounds like "ee" and never has an accent. With an accent, é means "is".
  • mas (but) and mais (more) are different words. In speech mas often sounds like mais, but keep them apart in writing.
  • porque (one word) answers por que? (two words): Por que você não vem? — Porque tô cansado.
  • para + infinitive says what something is for: Junto dinheiro para viajar. In speech it shrinks to pra.
