What it is

A passive sentence puts the thing affected by an action in the spotlight and moves the doer to the background, or drops it altogether. Spanish has four tools for this, and they're not interchangeable. Ser + participle presents the action: El puente fue construido en 1890. Estar + participle describes the state the action leaves behind: El puente está cerrado. The passive se (Se construyó un puente nuevo) and a plain third-person plural (Construyeron un puente nuevo) are what people actually say in everyday conversation.

How to form it

The ser passive: ser in any tense + participle + (optionally) por + the doer, called the agent. The participle behaves like an adjective, so it agrees in gender and number with the subject.

Subjectserparticipleagent / extra
El museofueinauguradopor la alcaldesa
La catedralfueconstruidaen el siglo XVII
Los resultadosseránpublicadosel lunes
Las calleshan sidocerradaspor la policía

Look at han sido cerradas: sido never changes, but the participle after it agrees.

Estar + participle: the participle agrees here too: La puerta está abierta. Los platos ya están lavados.

The passive se: se + verb in the third person, singular or plural to match the noun: Se vende casa. Se venden casas. No agent is mentioned.

The third-person plural: an active verb with no subject, meaning "someone" or "people": Me robaron la bici.

Many everyday participles are irregular, and they're the same in both passives:

When to use it

  • Ser + participle is typical of news, history books, formal reports and official notices, mostly in the past and the future: El sospechoso fue detenido anoche. Las obras serán terminadas en mayo. In the simple present it sounds very formal, and in conversation it's rare.
  • Estar + participle describes a result: the action is over and you see its effect. Compare La tienda fue cerrada por las autoridades (someone closed it: an action) with La tienda está cerrada (it's closed: a state).
  • The passive se is the everyday choice when the doer doesn't matter: Aquí se habla español. Se suspendieron las clases por la nieve.
  • The third-person plural is the most natural option in speech when someone unspecified did something: Abrieron un café nuevo en mi cuadra.
  • El sospechoso fue detenido anoche en el aeropuerto. The suspect was arrested last night at the airport.ser passive, news style
  • Cuando llegué, las luces ya estaban apagadas. When I arrived, the lights were already off.estar + participle: a result
  • Se suspendieron las clases por la nieve.Classes were cancelled because of the snow.passive se
  • Arreglaron por fin el semáforo de la esquina. The traffic light on the corner has finally been fixed.third-person plural

Contrasts and traps

  • Agreement. ✗ La catedral fue construido → construida. With haber the participle never changes (Han cerrado las calles); with ser and estar it agrees (Las calles fueron cerradas / están cerradas).
  • Ser or estar? ✗ La tienda es cerrada for "the shop is closed". A state is estar: está cerrada.
  • Por, not de or desde. ✗ Fue escrito de una periodista → por una periodista.
  • Don't overuse it. English uses the passive everywhere; Spanish doesn't. Mi celular fue robado isn't wrong, but it sounds like a police report: say Me robaron el celular.
  • Se agrees and takes no agent. Se venden departamentos, not ✗ Se vende departamentos. And don't add por + doer to a se sentence: ✗ Se firmó el acuerdo por los ministros → El acuerdo fue firmado por los ministros.

If you speak Portuguese

The ser and estar passives map almost one to one: foi construído por → fue construido por, está fechada → está cerrada. Watch three things: por el never contracts (✗ pelo), the pronoun goes before the verb (se vende, not ✗ vende-se), and Spanish has no short participles: fue pagado, fue aceptado.
