Pedir ou perguntar?

pedir = ask for, request, order (pedir a conta, pedir ajuda); perguntar = ask a question (perguntar onde fica, perguntar se…). A question itself is something you fazer: fazer uma pergunta.

The short answer
English "ask" is two verbs in Portuguese. Pedir is to ask for something: a thing, a favour, food in a restaurant, or an action (pedir a conta, pedir ajuda, pedir uma pizza). Perguntar is to ask a question, to get information (perguntar o preço, perguntar onde fica, perguntar se…).
How to form it
Perguntar is a regular -ar verb. Pedir changes its stem in one form only, the eu present: peço. The commands built on it keep the ç: standard peça, spoken pede.

The person you ask comes after para (in speech pra, pro) or a: Pedi ajuda pro meu vizinho. Perguntei ao motorista. With a pronoun, Brazilians put it before the verb: Ela me pediu…, Ele te perguntou…
When to use it
Pedir:
- a thing or a favour: pedir a conta, pedir um favor, pedir o telefone de alguém
- ordering food or a service: A gente pediu dois pastéis. Vou pedir um carro de aplicativo.
- asking someone to do something: pedir pra + infinitive in everyday speech: Ela me pediu pra esperar.
- fixed phrases: pedir desculpa (apologise), pedir emprestado (borrow).
Perguntar:
- a question word or a quoted question: Perguntei onde fica a farmácia.
- yes/no questions with se (whether): O garçom perguntou se a gente queria sobremesa.
- a piece of information: perguntar o preço, perguntar as horas, perguntar o caminho
- perguntar por alguém = ask after someone: Seu avô perguntou por você.

Contrasts and traps
- Ask for the bill is pedir a conta, never perguntar a conta. Ask the price is perguntar o preço.
- Ask a question is fazer uma pergunta: not pedir uma pergunta, and perguntar uma pergunta sounds redundant.
- Asking someone to do something: speech uses pedir pra + infinitive. Pedir que exists too, but needs the subjunctive, which comes at B1.
- lhe sounds formal, and Brazilians never start a sentence with it: say Perguntei pra ele or Ele me perguntou.
- Ordering: pedir covers the Spanish and English "order" in restaurants and apps. Ordenar means to command or put in order.
If you speak Spanish
The meanings match pedir / preguntar, so the traps are in the forms: pido → peço, pidió → pediu, and pre- becomes per-: preguntó → perguntou. Me pidió que llamara becomes me pediu pra ligar, with no subjunctive. Pedir prestado is pedir emprestado, and if you say ordenar for food, switch to pedir.
