What it is
A conditional sentence has two halves: the condition, introduced by se (if), and the result. To choose the verb forms, Portuguese asks one question: how real is the condition?
- A general truth or a present fact: Se você esquenta o gelo, ele derrete. (If you heat ice, it melts.)
- A real possibility in the future: Se fizer sol amanhã, a gente vai à praia. (If it’s sunny tomorrow, we’ll go to the beach.)
- An unreal or imagined situation now: Se eu tivesse mais tempo, viajaria mais. (If I had more time, I’d travel more.)
You already know all the pieces: the future subjunctive (pt-g-055, pt-g-056), the imperfect subjunctive (pt-g-057) and the conditional, called futuro do pretérito (pt-g-059). This topic puts them together.
How to form it
| Type | se-clause | Result | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| General truth / present fact | se + present | present | Se você mistura azul e amarelo, dá verde. |
| Real future | se + future subjunctive | present · ir + infinitive · future · command | Se você puder, me liga. |
| Unreal present | se + imperfect subjunctive | conditional (writing) · imperfeito (speech) | Se eu tivesse carro, viajaria / viajava. |
| Formal condition | caso + present subjunctive | future · present · command | Caso chova, o evento será adiado. |
Real conditions: se + future subjunctive
When the condition may well happen, the se-clause takes the futuro do subjuntivo: se eu tiver, se você puder, se a gente for, se vocês vierem, se fizer sol. English uses the present here ("if you can"), but Portuguese marks the uncertain future. The result looks forward with the present (the everyday choice), ir + infinitive, the simple future (formal) or a command:
- Se você chegar antes de mim, pega a chave com a vizinha.
- Se eu ganhar a bolsa, vou estudar em Porto Alegre.
- Se o senhor tiver dúvidas, entre em contato.
Watch the tricky pairs: ver gives se eu vir, vir gives se eu vier, and ir and ser share se eu for.
Unreal conditions: se + imperfect subjunctive
When the condition is contrary to fact or just imagined, the se-clause takes the imperfeito do subjuntivo (tivesse, fosse, soubesse, morasse) and the result takes the futuro do pretérito (teria, seria, faria, diria):
- Se eu soubesse cozinhar, abriria um restaurante. (I can’t cook.)
- Se o Raimundo fosse mais paciente, seria um ótimo professor.
In conversation most Brazilians replace the conditional with the imperfeito: Se eu tivesse carro, ia pra Bonito nas férias. Se eu soubesse a senha, te passava. This is normal, educated speech. In writing and formal speech, use the -ria form.
Order and comma
Either half can come first. When the se-clause comes first, a comma usually separates the two: Se der, eu vou. / Eu vou se der.

When to use it
- Advice: Se eu fosse você, levaria um guarda-chuva.
- Plans that depend on something: Se o ônibus atrasar, a gente vai de táxi.
- Offers and instructions: Se precisar de alguma coisa, é só chamar.
- Daydreams and complaints about the present: Se a gente morasse perto da praia, correria todo dia.
- Formal notices, contracts and e-mails: Caso o pagamento não seja confirmado, o pedido será cancelado. After caso the verb is in the present subjunctive, never the future: caso chova, not caso chover.
Two set phrases you will hear all the time: se der (if it works out, if I can make it) and se Deus quiser (God willing).
Contrasts and traps
- No conditional or future in the se-clause. Se eu teria and se você terá are wrong: se eu tivesse, se você tiver. The -ria form belongs only in the result, just like English "would".
- Present or future subjunctive? Use the present only for general truths or something already true now: Se você já sabe a resposta, por que está perguntando? For a future event: Se o Caio ligar mais tarde, fala que eu saí, not se o Caio liga.
- Real or unreal? Se eu tiver dinheiro, te empresto (I may have it). Se eu tivesse dinheiro, te emprestava (I don’t have it).
- Don’t mix the halves. Se eu tivesse tempo, vou viajar is a mismatch: tivesse goes with viajaria or viajava.
- se você ver. Very common in speech, but non-standard. Write se você vir (from ver); se você vier comes from vir, "to come".
If you speak Spanish
Unreal conditions are almost a copy of Spanish: si tuviera → se eu tivesse, si fuera → se eu fosse, tendría → teria. Portuguese has only the -sse form (falara is a literary pluperfect), and the conditional has no written accent.
Real conditions are where Spanish speakers slip. Spanish uses the present after si (si tienes tiempo mañana); Portuguese wants the future subjunctive: se você tiver tempo amanhã. Likewise si puedes → se você puder, si vienes → se você vier, si hace sol → se fizer sol. And en caso de que + subjunctive becomes caso + present subjunctive, without de que: caso você precise.
