B23 min read40 exercisesBuilds on: estar + gerund (progressive), Personal infinitive I

The short answer

Compress subordinate clauses with a gerund (Chegando em casa, me liga) or a preposition + infinitive (Ao sair, feche a porta; Por estar doente, faltou) for time, cause, condition, concession or manner.

Full clause

  • Quando você chegar em casa, me liga.
  • Como estava doente, faltou.
  • Se você sair agora, chega a tempo.

Reduced clause

  • Chegando em casa, me liga.
  • Por estar doente, faltou.
  • Saindo agora, você chega a tempo.
The same idea as a full clause and as a reduced clause.
gerund clauseChegando em casa, implied subject(você)main clauseme liga.
One subject for both parts: whoever arrives is whoever calls.

Key forms

  • Gerund = time/cause/condition: Saindo agora, você chega a tempo. Sabendo disso, desisti.
  • ao + infinitive = when/upon: Ao chegar, procure a recepção.
  • Gerund of manner/simultaneity: Ele saiu correndo.
  • Preposition + infinitive: Por estar doente, faltou. Saiu sem pagar.
  • Compound gerund (formal): Tendo terminado o trabalho, foi embora.

What it is

A reduced clause (oração reduzida) does the job of a subordinate clause without a conjunction and without a conjugated verb: Chegando em casa, me liga = Quando você chegar em casa, me liga. Ao sair, feche a porta = Quando sair, feche a porta. Gerunds and infinitives make sentences shorter and smoother, both in speech and in writing.

How to form it

Reduced clauseFull clauseMeaning
Chegando em casa, me liga.Quando você chegar em casa, me liga.time
Sabendo disso, desisti.Como eu sabia disso, desisti.cause
Saindo agora, você chega a tempo.Se você sair agora, chega a tempo.condition
Mesmo sabendo do risco, aceitou.Embora soubesse do risco, aceitou.concession
Ele saiu correndo.—manner
Ao entrar, ela percebeu o problema.Quando entrou, ela percebeu o problema.time (on / upon)
Por estar doente, faltou.Como estava doente, faltou.cause
Depois de jantar, saímos.Depois que jantamos, saímos.time
Tendo terminado o relatório, foi embora.Depois que terminou o relatório, foi embora.earlier action (formal)

The gerund never changes: -ando, -endo, -indo (chegando, sabendo, saindo). The infinitive after a preposition becomes personal when the subject is plural or different (pt-g-080): Ao chegarmos…, Por serem menores, não puderam entrar. The compound gerund tendo + participle marks an earlier action and is formal.

When to use it

Gerund clauses

  • Time: Chegando lá, me manda uma mensagem.
  • Cause: Sabendo que ia chover, levei o guarda-chuva.
  • Condition: Estudando um pouco todo dia, você passa na prova.
  • Manner or simultaneous action: Ela entrou cantando. Ele saiu correndo.
  • Concession, with mesmo: Mesmo ganhando pouco, ele ajuda a família.
  • Earlier action, formal: Tendo analisado os dados, a equipe recomendou mudanças.

Preposition + infinitive

  • ao + infinitive = "when / on": Ao chegar, procure a recepção. It is neutral to formal; in conversation quando is more common.
  • por + infinitive = "because": Por ser feriado, o banco está fechado.
  • antes de, depois de, até, sem, para, apesar de + infinitive: Leia antes de assinar. Saiu sem pagar. Apesar de estar cansada, foi.
  • até + infinitive = "until", with its own subject when needed: Espera aqui até eu voltar.

Contrasts and traps

  • The dangling gerund: the gerund's implied subject should be the subject of the main clause. Saindo de casa, começou a chover — who was leaving? Say Quando eu estava saindo de casa, começou a chover, or keep one subject: Saindo de casa, peguei chuva.
  • No gerund for purpose: purpose is pra / para + infinitive: Liguei pra saber o horário, never liguei sabendo.
  • No gerund for a later, separate event: Ele se formou em 2010, casando em 2012 → …e se casou em 2012. News reports do use a gerund for an immediate consequence (O ônibus bateu no muro, ferindo três pessoas), but don't stretch it.
  • Gerundismo is something else: vou estar enviando (pt-g-087) is a register problem, not a reduced clause.
  • Word order: the reduced clause usually comes first and is followed by a comma; at the end it needs no comma when it shows manner: Ela saiu correndo.

If you speak Spanish

Gerund clauses and al + infinitive transfer almost directly: Llegando a casa, llámame → Chegando em casa, me liga; Al entrar → Ao entrar (ao, never al). Por estar enfermo → Por estar doente, and sin decir nada → sem dizer nada. Two calques to avoid: después de que + verb becomes depois que + verb or depois de + infinitive (depois de que doesn't exist), and the infinitive needs its personal ending when the subject is plural: por ser menores → por serem menores.

Try 3 now

1 / 3

(chegar) lá, me manda uma mensagem.

When you get there, text me.

No account needed.
