Compound subjunctives (tenha / tivesse / tiver feito)

Subjuntivos compostos (tenha feito, tivesse feito, tiver feito)

La réponse courte

ter in the subjunctive + participle puts a finished action under a subjunctive trigger: tenha feito (present perfect), tivesse feito (pluperfect), tiver feito (future perfect).

você tiver terminadome avisamaintenant
tiver feito: finished before another future moment.

Not done yet

  • Espero que você goste.
  • Duvido que ele venha.
  • Quando você terminar, me avisa.

Already done

  • Espero que você tenha gostado.
  • Duvido que ele tenha vindo.
  • Quando você tiver terminado, me avisa.
The simple subjunctive looks ahead; the compound one looks back at something done.

Formes clés

  • tenha feito: Espero que você tenha gostado. Duvido que ele tenha visto.
  • tivesse feito: Queria que você tivesse vindo. Ele fala como se tivesse visto tudo.
  • tiver feito: Quando você tiver terminado, me avisa. Se até sexta ele não tiver respondido…
  • ter + invariable participle; haja/houvesse/houver feito only in legal or literary texts

Cette explication n’est pas encore disponible en français ; elle s’affiche donc en anglais.

What it is

Sometimes the subjunctive has to talk about something that is already done: I hope you enjoyed the party, I doubt he has read the email, when you have finished, let me know. Portuguese builds these with ter in the subjunctive + past participle. There are three compound subjunctives, one for each simple subjunctive you learned at B1:

  • pretérito perfeito do subjuntivo — tenha feito: a finished action under a present trigger. Espero que você tenha gostado.
  • pretérito mais-que-perfeito do subjuntivo — tivesse feito: a finished action under a past trigger, or a past that didn't happen. Eu queria que você tivesse vindo.
  • futuro composto do subjuntivo — tiver feito: an action that will be finished before another future moment. Quando você tiver terminado, me avisa.

How to form it

Conjugate ter in the subjunctive and add the past participle. The participle never changes.

Personpresent: tenhapast: tivessefuture: tiver
eutenha feitotivesse feitotiver feito
você / ele / ela / a gentetenha feitotivesse feitotiver feito
nóstenhamos feitotivéssemos feitotivermos feito
vocês / eles / elastenham feitotivessem feitotiverem feito

The irregular participles from A2 all apply: feito, dito, visto, vindo, posto, aberto, escrito, coberto, descoberto. With ter, Brazilians normally use the short forms ganho, gasto, pago (Espero que você tenha pago a conta). After que or não, an object pronoun can go before ter (Espero que ele não te tenha incomodado); relaxed speech often puts it before the participle (…não tenha te incomodado).

When to use it

tenha feito: present trigger, finished action

Use it after the B1 triggers (espero que, duvido que, não acho que, é possível que, fico feliz que, talvez, embora) when the action is already over:

  • Fico feliz que você tenha gostado.
  • Talvez ela já tenha saído.
  • Não acho que ele tenha entendido.
  • Embora tenha estudado muito, não passou.

tivesse feito: past trigger, or an unreal past

When the trigger is in the past and the action happened before it: Eu esperava que ele tivesse ligado. Duvidei que eles tivessem lido o contrato. The same form expresses wishes about a past you can't change and comparisons with como se:

  • Queria que você tivesse vindo. (I wish you had come.)
  • Ele fala como se tivesse visto tudo.

It is also the se half of unreal past conditions (Se eu tivesse sabido…), the next topic.

tiver feito: finished before a future moment

After quando, assim que, logo que, depois que, se and enquanto não, use the compound future subjunctive for something that will be complete before the main event. The main clause looks to the future: present, ir + infinitive or an imperative.

  • Quando vocês tiverem terminado a análise, a gente conversa.
  • Assim que eu tiver lido, te devolvo o livro.
  • Se até sexta ele não tiver respondido, eu ligo.

Contrasts and traps

TriggerNot done yet (simple)Already done (compound)
Espero que…você gostevocê tenha gostado
Eu esperava que…você gostassevocê tivesse gostado
Quando…você terminarvocê tiver terminado
  • Simple or compound? Espero que ele chegue bem (he's still travelling) / Espero que ele tenha chegado bem (he should be there by now).
  • The trigger's tense decides: Espero que tenha gostado / Eu esperava que tivesse gostado.
  • Facts stay in the indicative: Sei que você gostou. Acho que ele já saiu.
  • No agreement: Espero que elas tenham gostado, never gostadas.
  • ter, not haver: haja feito, houvesse feito, houver feito exist, but they belong to legal texts and literature. Brazilians say tenha, tivesse, tiver.

If you speak Spanish

Two of the three map neatly: haya hecho → tenha feito, hubiera / hubiese hecho → tivesse feito. The third is the trap. Spanish uses the present perfect subjunctive for an action finished before a future moment (cuando hayas terminado); Portuguese uses the future subjunctive: quando você tiver terminado, not quando você tenha terminado. Use ter every time, and watch the participles that differ from Spanish: hecho → feito, dicho → dito, puesto → posto, roto → quebrado, and vuelto → voltado, which is regular in Portuguese.
