What it is
Spanish has flexible word order, but to highlight one element clearly it often uses a cleft sentence: ser + the focused element + a relative clause (Fue en Cartagena donde nos conocimos). Its mirror image, the pseudo-cleft, announces the topic first and the focus after ser (Lo que más me preocupa es la falta de tiempo). Add the emphatic article (¡La cara que puso!) and subject inversion (Me lo contó Lucía), and you can steer the listener's attention exactly where you want it.
How to form it
In a cleft, the relative must match the focus:
| Focus | Relative | Example |
|---|---|---|
| a place | donde | Fue en Cartagena donde nos conocimos. |
| a time | cuando | Fue en 2015 cuando cambié de carrera. |
| a manner | como | Así es como se prepara un buen ceviche. |
| a person | quien / el que / la que … | Fue mi abuela quien me enseñó a cocinar. |
| a thing or idea | lo que / el que / la que … | Es esto lo que no entiendo. |
| a phrase with a preposition | same preposition + relative | Es de eso de lo que quería hablarte. |
ser usually takes the tense of the other verb: Es aquí donde vivo, Fue aquí donde nací. With a personal focus, ser agrees with the person: Fuimos nosotros los que llamamos. After quien the verb normally stays in the third person: Fui yo quien lo dijo.
When to use it
Clefts: correcting and contrasting
Clefts are perfect for correcting someone or for contrast: No fue Pablo quien me lo contó, fue Lucía. Fue en 2015 cuando decidí cambiar de carrera, no antes. When the focus carries a preposition, formal Spanish repeats it before the relative: Es con ella con quien tienes que hablar. Es de eso de lo que quería hablarte.
Pseudo-clefts: announcing what matters
Lo que + clause + ser + focus builds suspense and is very common in presentations and arguments: Lo que necesito es dormir. Lo que proponen es reducir costos. The same pattern works with quien, donde, cuando and como: Quien lo sabe todo es Marta. Donde mejor se come es en casa de mi abuela. When the focus is plural, ser agrees with it: Lo que más me gusta son las tardes de lluvia.
Emphatic exclamations
The article plus que turns a noun, adjective or adverb into an exclamation of intensity: ¡La cara que puso! ¡Las ganas que tengo de verte! ¡Lo mal que cantó! After no sabes, no te imaginas or fíjate, it works as an indirect exclamation: ¡No sabes lo difícil que fue convencerla!
Inversion for new information
New information tends to go last. Putting the subject after the verb focuses it: Ha llamado tu mamá. Me lo contó Lucía. Llega mañana Pedro.
- Fue mi abuela quien me enseñó a cocinar. It was my grandmother who taught me to cook.cleft, person
- Lo que necesito son unas vacaciones. What I need is a holiday.pseudo-cleft, plural agreement
- ¡Lo rápido que habla!How fast he talks!emphatic lo … que
Contrasts and traps
- Match the relative. Es aquí donde…, Fue entonces cuando…, Fue Ana quien…. Plain que (Es aquí que…) is the so-called que galicado: very frequent in Latin American speech, but avoided in careful writing.
- Keep the lo. Lo que más me preocupa es…, never Que más me preocupa es…
- Repeat the preposition. Es de eso de lo que hablo, not Es de eso que hablo in formal style.
- Plural focus, plural ser. Lo que me gusta son los domingos.
- Tense harmony. Fue en 2015 cuando decidí, not Es en 2015 cuando decidí (except in the historical present).
If you speak Portuguese
Portuguese builds every cleft with que: Foi aqui que nos conhecemos, Foi a Ana que me disse, É por isso que não fui. Standard Spanish matches the relative to the focus: Fue aquí donde, Fue Ana quien (or la que), Por eso es por lo que (or simply Por eso). Pseudo-clefts transfer well, but keep lo: O que me preocupa é… → Lo que me preocupa es… And remember the agreement: O que eu preciso é de férias → Lo que necesito son unas vacaciones.
