The short answer

Linking words turn a list of facts into a story or an argument. At this level the key ones are então and aí (then, so), por isso (that's why), como (since, at the start of the sentence), porque (because), enquanto (while), se (if), and antes de / depois de + infinitive (before / after doing). In speech, Brazilians chain whole stories with aí… aí… aí….

estava chovendo, a gente ficou em casa.

Since it was raining, we stayed at home.

Contrasts and traps

  • aí in a story means "then / and so", not "there": Aí ela me ligou — Then she called me. Daí is common in the South and in São Paulo. E aí? alone is a greeting: "What's up?"
  • então = "so" (result) or "then" (next step); at the start of a turn it is a filler: Então….
  • porque at the very start of a sentence is not wrong, but it sounds unfinished; Brazilians prefer Como… or Já que… there.
  • depois de + conjugated verb is a classic error: depois de jantar or depois que jantei, never depois de jantei.
  • enquanto is one word. Em quanto means "in how much": Em quanto tempo?
  • só que (but) and aí belong to speech; in writing use mas, no entanto, em seguida.

If you speak Spanish

The system is the same as in Spanish, so the traps are words: entonces → então, mientras → enquanto, si → se, por eso → por isso, después → depois. Ahí is not aí: in a Portuguese story aí means "and then". And pois is not your filler pues: it means "because / since" in formal writing, and pois é means "right, exactly".
