What it is
Brazilians write very differently from how they speak, far more than English speakers do. A WhatsApp message and a formal email about the same thing can differ in verbs, pronouns, connectors and vocabulary. Both poles are Brazilian Portuguese; the skill is choosing the right one and rewriting from one to the other.
How to form it
| Area | Speech | Formal writing |
|---|---|---|
| estar | tô, tá, tava, tão | estou, está, estava, estão |
| para | pra, pro, pros | para, para o, para os |
| we | a gente vai | nós vamos |
| there is | tem muita gente | há muitas pessoas / existem… |
| object pronoun | vi ele | eu o vi |
| subject of an infinitive | pra mim fazer | para eu fazer |
| where is | cadê o relatório? | onde está o relatório? |
| requests | me manda o arquivo? | poderia me enviar o arquivo? |
| connectors | aí, daí, só que, tipo | então, em seguida, no entanto, por exemplo |
| verbs | pegar, botar, achar, ver, falar, mandar | obter / receber, colocar, considerar, verificar, afirmar, enviar |
| fillers | né?, tá?, beleza? | (left out) |
| opening / closing | Oi, gente! … Abraços | Prezados, … Atenciosamente, |
When to use it
- Spoken register: conversations, messages to friends and to colleagues you know well, social media.
- Neutral written register: most work emails, news, school texts. Standard verbs (estou, para, nós), but the pronoun still goes before the verb: Ele me disse que…
- Formal register: official emails, requests to institutions, complaints, academic texts. No a gente, no pra, no existential tem; formal verbs, impersonal formulas (Solicita-se…, Informamos que…) and the polite conditional (poderia, gostaria).
- In between: a WhatsApp message to your manager is usually neutral: Oi, Carla, tudo bem? Te mando o relatório até as cinco. No beleza?, but no Prezada either.
Rewriting step by step
Start from a message: Oi, Ana! Tô te mandando o relatório. Aí, tipo, tem uns dados que a gente não conseguiu pegar. Me fala se tá tudo certo, beleza?
- Opening: Oi, Ana! → Prezada Ana,
- Verbs: tô te mandando → segue em anexo; tá → está.
- a gente → nós: a gente não conseguiu pegar → não conseguimos obter.
- tem → há: tem uns dados → há alguns dados.
- Connectors: drop aí, tipo; add a formal link if needed: Cabe ressaltar que…
- The request: Me fala se… → Peço que me informe se… or Poderia me informar se…?
- Closing: beleza? → Atenciosamente,
The result: Prezada Ana, segue em anexo o relatório. Cabe ressaltar que há alguns dados que não conseguimos obter. Peço, por gentileza, que me informe se está tudo correto. Atenciosamente, …
Going the other way matters too: turning a formal notice into a message for friends means nós → a gente, há → tem, para → pra, and a friendly né? at the end.
Contrasts and traps
- Mixed registers: Prezado senhor, tá tudo certo, né? reads as careless. Pick one register per text.
- Gerundismo: Vou estar enviando o relatório is mocked as call-centre talk. Write Vou enviar or Enviarei.
- Overcorrection: Eu lhe vi is wrong; lhe is an indirect object. Formal: Eu o vi / Eu a vi.
- Too formal for the context: Envie-me o arquivo, por obséquio in a team chat sounds sarcastic.
- Formal is not European: formal Brazilian still says arquivo, tela, usuário, cadastrar, and keeps the pronoun before the main verb after an auxiliary: Poderia me enviar…
If you speak Spanish
Your formal Spanish transfers well (solicitar, informar, verificar), but the formulas are different: Estimado → Prezado; Saludos cordiales → Atenciosamente or Cordialmente; Quedo a la espera de su respuesta → Fico no aguardo do seu retorno; Adjunto el informe → Segue em anexo o relatório. The harder pole for Spanish speakers is the informal one: their Portuguese often lacks a gente, tá, pra, né. Practise both directions.
