What it is

At B2 you learned aunque, a pesar de and por más que. C1 adds the concessive tools of careful writing and of expressive speech: formal aun cuando and si bien, the intensifying por muy … que, the repeated-verb formulas (pase lo que pase, digan lo que digan, quieras o no) and the colloquial con lo que…, which concedes something with a hint of indignation or surprise.

How to form it

StructureMoodMeaningExample
aun cuandoindicative / subjunctiveeven though (fact) / even if (hypothesis); formalAun cuando le ofrezcan más, no aceptará.
si bienindicativealthough (formal, concedes a known fact)Si bien reconoció el error, no dimitió.
por muy + adjective / adverb + quesubjunctivehowever …Por muy cansado que estés…
por mucho / mucha / muchos / muchas + noun + quesubjunctivehowever much / many …Por mucho dinero que tenga…
verb + lo que / donde / como + same verbsubjunctivewhatever, wherever, howeverpase lo que pase, vaya donde vaya
verb + o nosubjunctivewhether … or notquieras o no
con lo que / con lo + adjective + que / con el … queindicativeconsidering how much … (and yet)Con lo que estudió, y reprobó.

When to use it

aun cuando: formal "even though / even if"

aun cuando works like aunque in formal texts. With the indicative it concedes a real fact; with the subjunctive, a hypothesis or a fact you dismiss:

  • Aun cuando sabía la verdad, prefirió callarse.Even though she knew the truth, she chose to stay quiet.fact → indicative
  • Aun cuando le ofrezcan más dinero, no aceptará.Even if they offer her more money, she will not accept.hypothesis → subjunctive

Write aun without an accent here: it means "even". Aún with an accent means "still".

si bien: concede, then contradict

si bien + indicative is the formal way to grant a point before contradicting it, typical of essays, reports and op-eds: Si bien es cierto que ha bajado el desempleo, la precariedad sigue siendo alta. It never takes the subjunctive.

por muy … que: "however …"

por muy + adjective or adverb + que + subjunctive says that the degree, however high, changes nothing: Por muy cansado que estés, tienes que terminarlo. With a noun use por mucho / mucha / muchos / muchas … que: Por muchas excusas que pongas, no te creo. With a verb alone: por mucho que insistas.

Repeated-verb formulas

Spanish repeats the same verb in the present subjunctive around lo que, donde, como, cuando or quien: pase lo que pase, digan lo que digan, hagas lo que hagas, sea como sea, vaya donde vaya, cueste lo que cueste. With o no the choice is binary: quieras o no, llueva o no. Both verbs are identical; only the main verb carries the real tense.

con lo que…: concession with feeling

In conversation, con lo que + verb, con lo + adjective + que and con el / la / los / las + noun + que present a fact that should have led to a different result: Con lo que estudió, y reprobó. Con lo simpática que es, no entiendo que no tenga amigos en la oficina. Con el frío que hace y vas en manga corta. The indicative is used because the fact is real; a following y often marks the surprise.

Contrasts and traps

  • Repeated verbs are identical. pase lo que pase, never pase lo que pasa.
  • si bien = indicative only. Si bien es cierto…, not si bien sea.
  • muy before adjectives, mucho elsewhere. por muy cansado que, por mucho que corras, por mucho dinero que.
  • aun (even) vs aún (still). Aun cuando llueva has no accent.
  • con lo que is not "with what". It means "considering how much".

If you speak Portuguese

Portuguese builds the repeated formulas with the future subjunctive (aconteça o que acontecer, digam o que disserem, seja como for, custe o que custar); Spanish repeats the same present subjunctive twice: pase lo que pase, digan lo que digan, sea como sea, cueste lo que cueste. Por mais cansado que você esteja becomes por muy (or por más) cansado que estés. Beware of three calques: mesmo que is aunque or aun cuando, never mismo que; Brazilian se bem que is a casual afterthought ("though"), while Spanish si bien is formal and opens the sentence; and querendo ou não is quieras o no, with a subjunctive, not a gerund.
