por vs para (first pass)

The short answer

English "for" splits in two. para (in speech pra) looks ahead to a goal: where you are going, what something is for, who gets it, when it is due. por looks at the way or the reason: the route you take, the cause, what you pay or swap, how often. É pra você — It's for you. Obrigado por tudo — Thanks for everything.

How to form it

Both are simple prepositions, but por fuses with the definite article, always, in speech and in writing. para keeps its full form in writing; in speech it shrinks to pra and fuses with the article too:

So passar por + o centro is passar pelo centro, and obrigada por + a ajuda is obrigada pela ajuda. Pra and pro are everyday speech and informal writing (messages, social media); use para a and para o in formal texts.

When to use it

Ask yourself: is it a goal, or a way or reason?

• Goal → para. Destination (Amanhã a gente vai pra Manaus), purpose with an infinitive (Ela economiza para viajar), recipient (Liguei para ela), deadline (É pra sexta) and opinion (Pra mim, esse é o melhor açaí de Belém).
• Way or reason → por. Route (O ônibus passa pelo centro?), cause (por causa da chuva), thanks (Obrigado por vir!), exchange (Troquei minha bicicleta por um skate), rate (cem reais por mês) and means (por e-mail).
• Fixed phrases with por: por favor, por exemplo, por isso, por enquanto, pelo menos, pela primeira vez.

• Comprei um presente pra minha mãe.I bought a present for my mum.para = recipient
• Vou para Belém na sexta para visitar meus avós.I'm going to Belém on Friday to visit my grandparents.destination + purpose

Contrasts and traps

• Thanks takes por: obrigado por tudo, obrigada pela ajuda, obrigado por vir. And obrigado/obrigada agrees with the speaker.
• Paying is por: paguei vinte reais pelo livro, never para o livro.
• Duration: Morei em Goiânia (por) cinco anos. Brazilians often drop por; para cinco anos is wrong.
• Parts of the day take de: de manhã, à tarde, à noite. Pela manhã exists, but it sounds formal.
• Fiz isso pra você (I made it for you, a gift) and Fiz isso por você (I did it for your sake) are both correct, with different meanings.
• The contraction is not optional: por o and por a do not exist; say pelo and pela.

If you speak Spanish

Good news: por and para divide the work almost exactly as in Spanish. The new part is the contraction: por el → pelo, por la → pela, so por lo menos is pelo menos and por primera vez is pela primeira vez. Two more: a causa de is por causa de, and por la mañana is de manhã.
