ser or estar? (A1 contrasts)
Ser ou estar? (contrastes básicos)
Krótka odpowiedź
Many adjectives work with both verbs, and the verb changes the meaning: ser says what something is like in general, estar how it is right now or how it has turned out. Plus everyday chunks: Tá bom!, tô de férias, tô de folga.
ser: in general
- A cidade é bonita.
- O Caio é chato.
- Curitiba é fria.
estar: now, or how it turned out
- Você tá bonita hoje!
- O Caio tá chato hoje.
- Hoje tá frio.
Tá bom = OK
- — Às oito? — Tá bom!
- Tá bom, pode ser.
Describing: agreement
- A pizza tá boa!
- As frutas tão boas.
Kluczowe formy

- É bom (good in general) / Tá bom! (OK! / it's fine) / Tá bom? (OK?)

What it is
You already know the core rule: ser for what something is, estar for how or where it is now. With adjectives, both verbs are often possible, and the choice changes the meaning:
- ser + adjective = what someone or something is like in general, as a trait: A Lívia é calma.
- estar + adjective = how someone or something is right now, or how it has turned out: Hoje ela tá nervosa. O bolo tá ótimo!
Brazilians make this choice dozens of times a day, and in speech estar is nearly always tá (or tô, tão). This topic drills the pairs you will hear most, plus a few fixed phrases with estar.
How to form it
| ser: in general | estar: now / turned out | |
|---|---|---|
| bonito | A cidade é bonita. (a pretty city) | Você tá bonita! (you look nice) |
| chato | O filme é chato. (a boring film) | Ele tá chato hoje. (being a pain) |
| bom | O pão daqui é bom. (good bread) | Tá bom! (OK!) |
| frio | Curitiba é fria. (a cold city) | Hoje tá frio. (cold today) |
| caro | O Rio é caro. (an expensive city) | O tomate tá caro. (pricey right now) |
- The adjective agrees with the noun either way: a cidade é bonita, as frutas tão boas.
- Tá bom! (OK!) is the exception: a fixed phrase that never changes.
- estar de + noun describes a temporary situation, often a role or a break:
| estar de… | meaning |
|---|---|
| tô de férias | I’m on holiday |
| tá de folga | has the day off |
| tá de plantão | is on duty, on call (doctors, pharmacies) |
| tão de mudança | are moving house |
| tô de bom humor / de mau humor | I’m in a good / bad mood |
When to use it
- A Lívia é calma.Lívia is a calm person.ser: personality
- Hoje ela tá nervosa.Today she’s on edge.estar: how she is today
- Curitiba é fria no inverno.Curitiba is cold in winter.ser: the climate
- A água do mar tá fria hoje. The sea is cold today.estar: right now
- O bolo tá ótimo! The cake is great!estar: how it turned out
- — Às oito? — Tá bom!— At eight? — OK!Tá bom = OK
- Tô de folga hoje.I have the day off today.estar de + noun
Tá bom is everywhere: Tá bom! (OK!), Tá bom? (OK? All right?) and its cousins Tá ótimo! (Great!), Tá certo (Right) or just Tá (OK). Tá bem is also heard, but tá bom is far more common.
Contrasts and traps
- A quick test: if you can add today, now, this time or wow!, it’s probably estar. If it describes the kind of person or thing, it’s ser.
- Climate or weather: Curitiba é fria (a cold city), Hoje tá frio (cold today). How you feel is different again: Tô com frio (I’m cold).
- Tá bom (OK) never agrees, but A pizza tá boa (the pizza tastes good) does, because there you are describing the pizza.
- Ele é chato = he’s an annoying or boring person. Ele tá chato = he’s being annoying right now.
- Jobs and marital status stay with ser, even when they are new: Ela é médica. Ele é casado.
- Compliments: Você tá linda! praises how someone looks today; Você é linda says they are beautiful, full stop. Both are kind.
- Being ready is a result, so estar: O almoço tá pronto!
- Height: Ele é alto (he’s tall), but Nossa, você tá alto! (wow, you’ve grown!).
If you speak Spanish
The ser/estar contrast with adjectives works almost exactly as in Spanish (es aburrido / está aburrido), so trust your instinct. The traps here are words. pronto means "ready" (o jantar tá pronto), not "soon". chato means annoying or boring. Tá bom is your está bien. And estoy aburrido is tô entediado: tô chato would mean you are being a pain.
