Personal infinitive II
Infinitivo pessoal II
The short answer
Advanced uses: with expressed subjects (Ao chegarmos…), as a clause subject (Vocês saírem agora seria um erro), the compound form (por terem feito), as a lighter alternative to que + subjunctive, and when not to inflect.
que + subjunctive (formal)

- Antes que eles saiam…
- Para que todos entendam…
personal infinitive (everyday)
- É importante vocês virem.
- Antes de eles saírem…
- Para todos entenderem…
Key forms
- ao + personal inf: Ao chegarem, liguem.
- Clause subject: É estranho eles não terem ligado.
- Compound: por terem feito, depois de termos comido
- Alternation: É importante que vocês venham = É importante vocês virem.
- After perception/causative verbs inflection is optional: Vi os meninos sair(em).
- No inflection after modals: Podemos ir (never *podemos irmos)
What it is
Portuguese can give an infinitive its own person ending: para vocês entenderem, ao chegarmos. At B1 you used this personal infinitive (infinitivo pessoal) after prepositions and impersonal expressions. B2 widens the range: ao + personal infinitive, the infinitive clause as the subject of a sentence, the compound form (por terem feito), and perception and causative verbs. Just as important: knowing when not to inflect.
How to form it
| Person | simple: sair | compound: ter + participle |
|---|---|---|
| eu | sair | ter saído |
| você / ele / ela / a gente | sair | ter saído |
| nós | sairmos | termos saído |
| vocês / eles / elas | saírem | terem saído |
Only nós and vocês / eles add an ending (-mos, -em). Irregular verbs are regular here, since the base is the infinitive: fazermos, dizerem, serem, irem, termos. Stressed endings keep the accent of the infinitive where needed: saírem, reunirmos.
When to use it
ao + infinitive with its own subject
Ao + infinitive means "when / on doing". Inflect it when the subject is plural or differs from the main clause: Ao chegarmos ao hotel, percebemos o erro. Ao saírem, apaguem a luz.
The infinitive clause as subject
A whole clause can be the subject of ser, parecer or another verb: É estranho eles não terem ligado. Vocês saírem agora seria um erro. Não adianta a gente reclamar.
The compound personal infinitive
Ter (inflected) + participle marks an action finished before the main verb: Obrigado por vocês terem vindo! Depois de termos jantado, fomos dar uma volta. Eles foram multados por terem estacionado na calçada.
A lighter alternative to que + subjunctive
| que + subjunctive | personal infinitive |
|---|---|
| É importante que vocês venham. | É importante vocês virem. |
| Antes que eles saiam, … | Antes de eles saírem, … |
| Para que todos entendam, … | Para todos entenderem, … |
| Depois que nós comemos, … | Depois de comermos, … |
Both columns are correct. The infinitive is shorter and much more frequent in speech; the subjunctive sounds more formal.
After perception and causative verbs
With ver, ouvir, sentir, deixar, mandar, fazer the infinitive may be inflected or not: Vi os meninos saírem / Vi os meninos sair (also Vi os meninos saindo). Deixa as crianças brincarem! Mandei os alunos entrarem. With an object pronoun the formal style keeps it plain: Mandou-os entrar.
When not to inflect
- After modals and auxiliaries with the same subject: Podemos ir, Vamos sair, Temos que trabalhar, Eles querem viajar. Never podemos irmos.
- When the infinitive directly completes a verb with the same subject: Eles decidiram ficar. Preferimos esperar.
- After adjective + de: Esses exercícios são difíceis de fazer.
- Optional with the same subject after a preposition: Depois de comer(mos), saímos. Inflecting adds clarity or emphasis.
Contrasts and traps
- pra eu, not pra mim: antes de eu sair, sem eu saber, pra eu fazer.
- de + subject: careful writing keeps them apart (antes de eles saírem, o fato de o Brasil ter ganhado); speech contracts (antes deles saírem).
- No mixing: para que vocês entenderem → para vocês entenderem or para que vocês entendam.
- a gente is singular: É melhor a gente esperar, never a gente esperarmos.
If you speak Spanish
Spanish has no personal infinitive, so Spanish speakers either avoid it or forget the ending: para eles entender → para eles entenderem. Al llegar is ao chegar, and with a plural subject ao chegarmos. Por haber venido → por terem vindo; antes de que salgan → antes de eles saírem or antes que eles saiam, never antes de que.

Use para + personal infinitive or para que + subjunctive (entendam), never a mix.

a gente takes the 3rd-person singular: a gente esperar.

With an explicit plural subject, inflect the infinitive: terem vindo.
Typical for Spanish speakers

Portuguese has antes que + subjunctive or antes de + infinitive; antes de que is a calque.
Typical for Spanish speakers
Al chegarmos, ligamos para o hotel.Ao chegarmos, ligamos para o hotel.
The Portuguese contraction is ao (a + o), not al.
Typical for Spanish speakers
Note for English speakers
'thank you for coming' (to a group) = obrigado por terem vindo; 'for you to leave now' = vocês saírem agora.
Regional variation
- Common in both registers; hypercorrect inflection after modal verbs (*podemos irmos) is a known error.
- Speech contracts de + subject (antes deles saírem); careful writing keeps them apart (antes de eles saírem).
