What it is
Portuguese has a verb form that Spanish, French and Italian don’t: the infinitivo pessoal (personal infinitive). It is an infinitive with person endings, used when the infinitive has its own subject: É melhor vocês saírem cedo. (You’d better leave early.) Isso é pra gente comer depois. (That’s for us to eat later.)
It does the job English does with "for you to…", "before they…" or "without us…", and it is often a lighter alternative to que + subjunctive: para vocês saírem means the same as para que vocês saiam, but sounds more natural in everyday Brazilian Portuguese.
How to form it
Start from the infinitive and add nothing for eu, você, ele/ela and a gente, -mos for nós, and -em for vocês and eles/elas.
| falar | fazer | sair | |
|---|---|---|---|
| eu | falar | fazer | sair |
| você / ele / ela / a gente | falar | fazer | sair |
| nós | falarmos | fazermos | sairmos |
| vocês / eles / elas | falarem | fazerem | saírem |
Three things to notice:
- Every verb is regular. The endings go on the infinitive, so irregular verbs stay easy: fazer → fazermos, fazerem; ser → sermos, serem; ir → irmos, irem; ter → termos, terem; pôr → pormos, porem.
- Accent on the hiatus. In verbs like sair, cair and incluir, the stressed i before -em takes an acute accent: saírem, caírem, incluírem. There is no accent in sairmos.
- Say the subject. Since eu, você and a gente have no ending, the subject goes right before the infinitive: para eu entender, pra você entrar, pra gente comer.
Don’t mix it up with the future subjunctive
For regular verbs the two forms look identical (falarem, comerem). With irregular verbs they part ways, and that is where learners slip:
| Verb | personal infinitive (vocês) | future subjunctive (vocês) |
|---|---|---|
| falar | falarem | falarem |
| fazer | fazerem | fizerem |
| ter | terem | tiverem |
| ser | serem | forem |
| ir | irem | forem |
| poder | poderem | puderem |
| dizer | dizerem | disserem |
| ver | verem | virem |
| vir | virem | vierem |
The rule of thumb: after a conjunction such as quando, se or assim que → future subjunctive (quando vocês fizerem a prova); after a preposition such as antes de, depois de, para, sem, até or por → personal infinitive (antes de vocês fazerem a prova).

Petit exercice

When to use it
- After prepositions, when the infinitive has a different subject from the main verb: para/pra, antes de, depois de, até, sem, por. Liguei para vocês saberem. Até eles voltarem, eu cuido da casa. Fiz um mapa para os convidados não se perderem. The subject, when you say it, goes before the infinitive.
- After impersonal expressions: é melhor, é importante, é normal, está na hora de: É importante os alunos chegarem cedo. Já está na hora de vocês dormirem.
- With the same subject, you usually don’t need it: Saímos depois de jantar. (We left after dinner.) The ending is optional here; depois de jantarmos is also correct, and it helps when the subject would otherwise be unclear.
para eu or para mim?
When eu is the subject of the infinitive, standard Portuguese uses eu: Ele trouxe um livro para eu ler. You will hear pra mim ler constantly in casual speech, but in writing it is a classic error that teachers correct. With no verb after it, it is mim: Isso é pra mim. The test: if a verb follows and I am the one doing it, write eu.
Contrasts and traps
- Don’t drop the ending when there is an explicit plural subject: antes de vocês saírem, not antes de vocês sair. Casual speech sometimes drops it, but it sounds careless.
- A gente takes no ending: pra gente comer, never pra gente comermos.
- No subjunctive without que. É melhor vocês saiam mixes two structures. Say É melhor vocês saírem or É melhor que vocês saiam.
- de + subject. Careful writing keeps de and the subject apart (antes de eles chegarem), because eles is the subject of chegarem. In speech, antes deles chegarem is everywhere.
- virem has two lives: personal infinitive of vir (antes de vocês virem) and future subjunctive of ver (quando vocês virem o mar). Context tells them apart.
If you speak Spanish
Spanish has nothing like it, so the main risk is never using it. Whenever Spanish uses a preposition + que + subjunctive (para que lleguen, antes de que salgan, sin que lo sepan), try the Portuguese preposition + subject + personal infinitive: para eles chegarem, antes de eles saírem, sem eles saberem. Para que + subjunctive is still correct, just heavier. Two warnings: antes de que does not exist in Portuguese (say antes que or antes de + infinitive), and once you use the infinitive, don’t forget the ending: antes de vocês sair is a typical slip.
