What it is
At A2 you met the basic split: para looks ahead to a goal, por looks back at a cause or a route. At B1 the two prepositions (preposiciones) cover more ground, and many sentences change meaning when you swap one for the other: Lo hice por ti (for your sake) / Lo hice para ti (as a present for you). This topic sorts out the uses you need in everyday life: causes and favours, exchanges and prices, deadlines, employers and comparisons.
A useful picture: por stands behind the action (what caused it, what you gave in return, whose sake you did it for); para stands in front of it (where it's heading, who gets it, when it must be ready).
How to form it
Both take a noun, a pronoun or an infinitive: por ti, para mí, por llegar tarde, para aprender. Unlike a and de, they never merge with the article: por el parque, para el lunes. Speech often shortens para to pa' (pa' la casa); in writing, use para. These are the main uses:
| por | example | meaning |
|---|---|---|
| cause, reason | Me multaron por estacionar mal. | because of |
| for the sake of | Lo hice por ti. | for you, on your account |
| on behalf of, instead of | Hablé por mi jefe en la reunión. | in his place |
| exchange, price | Pagué veinte soles por la entrada. | in return for |
| going to get (Latin America) | Voy por pan. | to fetch |
| agent of a passive (B2) | un poema escrito por Gabriela Mistral | by |
| para | example | meaning |
|---|---|---|
| goal, purpose | Ahorro para un viaje. | in order to have or do |
| recipient | Estas flores son para ti. | intended for |
| deadline | Lo necesito para el viernes. | by |
| employer | Trabaja para una empresa chilena. | works for |
| comparison against expectation | Para ser tan joven, sabe mucho. | considering |
| opinion | Para mí, es demasiado caro. | in my view |
| destination | Salimos para Lima a las seis. | towards |
Two small grammar notes: after both prepositions, yo and tú become mí and ti (para mí, por ti); and when the goal involves another person, para takes que + subjunctive (Te lo explico para que lo entiendas), as you saw in the purpose topic.
When to use it
Ask one question: cause or goal? A quick test: if you can say "because of", "in exchange for" or "on behalf of", it's por; if you can say "in order to", "intended for" or "by" a date, it's para. Minimal pairs show the difference best:
- Lo hice por ti.I did it for you (for your sake).cause, motive
- Lo hice para ti.I made it for you (it's yours).recipient
- Trabajo por mi familia.I work for my family's sake.motive
- Trabajo para una empresa chilena.I work for a Chilean company.employer
- ¿Por qué estudias inglés?Why are you studying English?asks for the cause
- ¿Para qué estudias inglés?What are you studying English for?asks for the goal
Everyday favours and thanks: Gracias por todo. Perdón por la demora. ¿Puedes firmar por mí?
Prices and swaps: Lo compré por cien pesos. Te cambio mi libro por el tuyo.
Deadlines and plans: La tarea es para el lunes. Ya tenemos todo para la fiesta.
Comparing with what you'd expect: Para ser lunes, hay poco tráfico.
Movement: para gives the destination, por the route: Vamos para Lima (towards Lima) / Pasamos por Lima (through Lima). The A2 uses of por still apply: por teléfono (means), dos veces por semana (frequency), por el parque (through).
Fetching things. In Latin America, ir por means "go and get": Voy por el carro. In Spain you'll hear ir a por (Voy a por el coche). Ir a buscar works everywhere.
Contrasts and traps
- Duration is not para. Viví en Lima tres años or durante tres años; Latin America also says por tres años.
- Deadline or approximate time? para el lunes (by Monday) / por la mañana, por diciembre (around then).
- Thanks and apologies take por: gracias por venir, perdón por el ruido.
- por qué, para qué, porque. ¿Por qué…? (why?) → Porque…; ¿Para qué…? (what for?) → Para… or Para que…
- Para ser or por ser? Para ser tan joven, sabe mucho (considering he's young) / Por ser tan joven, no lo dejaron entrar (because he's young).
- estar por in Latin America means "be about to": La película está por empezar (= está a punto de empezar).
- Fixed expressions are learned whole: por favor, por fin, por eso, por ejemplo, por supuesto, por lo menos (at least), por si acaso (just in case); para siempre (forever), para nada (not at all).
If you also speak Portuguese
Portuguese splits por and para almost exactly like Spanish, so trust your instinct: trabalho para, troquei por, obrigado por. Two things don't transfer: Spanish never contracts por with the article (pelo, pela → por el, por la; Spanish pelo means "hair"), and the spoken pra is always written para. Vou buscar pão becomes voy por pan in Latin America.
