What it is
ter (to have) is one of the hardest-working verbs in Portuguese. Besides possession and family (Tenho dois irmãos), it is the verb for age (Tenho trinta anos), for obligation with ter que + infinitive (Tenho que trabalhar), and for a handful of everyday expressions where English says "to be": ter razão (to be right), ter certeza (to be sure), ter medo (to be afraid).
How to form it
| ter | |
|---|---|
| eu | tenho |
| você · ele · ela · a gente | tem |
| nós | temos |
| vocês · eles · elas | têm |

|---|---|---|
| possession, family | ter + noun | Você tem carro? · Tenho dois filhos. |
| age | ter + number + anos | Tenho vinte e oito anos. |
| obligation | ter que / ter de + infinitive | Tenho que sair cedo. |
| no obligation | não ter que + infinitive | Você não tem que pagar. |
| expressions | ter razão · certeza · medo de · vontade de · saudade de | Tenho medo de avião. |
- têm (plural) has a circumflex but sounds exactly like tem.
- ter que is the everyday form. ter de means the same; some style guides prefer it in formal writing. Only ter changes, and the second verb stays in the infinitive: ela tem que trabalhar, never ela tem que trabalha.
- In the answer to an age question, anos can be dropped: Quantos anos você tem? — Tenho trinta. For birthdays, use fazer: Faço trinta anos em maio (I turn thirty in May).
- tem que with no subject means "you have to, one must": Tem que pagar na entrada.
When to use it
- Você tem irmãos? — Tenho uma irmã.Do you have any siblings? — I have a sister.family
- Minha avó tem noventa anos.My grandmother is ninety.age
- Tenho que ir, tô atrasada!I have to go, I’m late!obligation, in speech
- Tem que pagar na entrada?Do you have to pay at the entrance?tem que with no subject
- Tem certeza? — Tenho.Are you sure? — I am.ter certeza
- Ele tem medo de cachorro. He’s afraid of dogs.ter medo de
- Tenho saudade da minha cidade.I miss my hometown.ter saudade de
In shops and cafés, Tem…? or Você tem…? is the normal way to ask for something: Você tem essa camiseta em azul? To answer a yes/no question, repeat the verb instead of saying sim: Você tem carro? — Tenho. / Não tenho. The same goes for obligation: Você tem que trabalhar amanhã? — Tenho.
Contrasts and traps
- Eu sou trinta anos ✗ → Eu tenho trinta anos. Age is something you have, never something you are.
- Tenho trabalhar ✗ → Tenho que trabalhar. Don’t drop que.
- não ter que means there is no obligation: Você não tem que pagar (you don’t have to pay). Brazilians also say Você não precisa pagar. Put não before tem: tem que não pagar would mean "must not pay".
- English "be + adjective" often becomes ter + noun: ter razão (or estar certo), ter certeza, ter medo de. But hunger, thirst, cold and sleepiness use estar com: Tô com fome, Tô com frio.
- saudade has no one-word English equivalent: Tenho saudade de você = I miss you. You will also hear tô com saudade and sinto saudade, and the plural saudades is just as common.
If you speak Spanish
Almost everything maps: tener → ter, tener que → ter que, tener razón → ter razão, tener miedo → ter medo. Watch the forms (tengo → tenho, tienen → têm), the ñ (años → anos) and three expressions that don’t match: estar seguro → ter certeza, tener ganas → ter vontade, hay que → tem que. And where Spanish says tengo hambre or tengo frío, Brazilians say tô com fome, tô com frio.
