Expressões de tempo: faz/há, desde, atrás, já, ainda

A24 min de lecture41 exercicesS’appuie sur : Pretérito perfeito: regular verbs

La réponse courte

faz/há + time = 'for' (with the present) and 'ago' (with the past); desde = since; atrás = ago (spoken); já/ainda/não… mais place events relative to now.

moro aqui (há dois anos)me mudei (há dois anos)maintenant
Me mudei pra cá há dois anos: the move is a point in the past. Moro aqui há dois anos: living here is a band that reaches now.

Still true: present

  • Moro aqui há dois anos.
  • Faz dois anos que moro aqui.
  • Moro aqui desde 2023.

Finished: perfeito

  • Me mudei há dois anos.
  • Faz dois anos que me mudei.
  • Me mudei dois anos atrás.
The same time words with a different tense: the present says it is still going on, the perfeito says when it happened.

Formes clés

  • Duration up to now: Moro aqui faz/há dois anos. / Faz dois anos que moro aqui.
  • Ago: Cheguei há uma semana / faz uma semana / uma semana atrás.
  • desde: desde 2020, desde criança, desde que cheguei
  • Há quanto tempo…? / Faz quanto tempo que…?
  • já, ainda, ainda não, não… mais; daqui a (in, future): daqui a dois dias

The short answer

Portuguese places events in time with a handful of small words. Faz or há + a stretch of time does two jobs. With the present tense it means "for", for something that is still going on: Moro aqui há dois anos — I've lived here for two years. With the past (pretérito perfeito) it means "ago": Cheguei há dois dias — I arrived two days ago. Desde means "since" a point in time, atrás is the everyday spoken "ago", and já, ainda, ainda não and não… mais say where things stand right now.

How to form it

MeaningPatternExample
for (still true)present + há / faz + timeMoro aqui há dois anos.
for (still true)Faz / Há + time + que + presentFaz dois anos que moro aqui.
agoperfeito + há / faz + timeCheguei há uma semana.
ago (speech)perfeito + time + atrásCheguei uma semana atrás.
sincedesde + a point in timeMoro aqui desde 2022.
how long?Há / Faz quanto tempo (que)…?Há quanto tempo você mora aqui?
in (from now)daqui a + timeO ônibus sai daqui a dez minutos.

Faz and há never change: faz dez anos, há dez anos, never fazem or hão. This há is a form of the verb haver, so it is always written with h and an accent.

The small words that relate an event to now:

  • já = already, ever: Já almocei. · Você já foi a Manaus?
  • ainda = still: Ainda moro com meus pais.
  • ainda não = not yet: Ainda não terminei.
  • não… mais = not any more: Não moro mais lá. (não before the verb, mais after it)
  • nunca mais = never again: Nunca mais comi lá.

When to use it

  • Something that started in the past and is still true: present + há or faz. In the negative it means "I haven't… for": Faz muito tempo que não vou à praia.
  • A finished event and how long ago it happened: perfeito + há, faz or atrás.
  • A starting point (a date, a day, an age, an event): desde. Desde 2019, desde segunda, desde criança, desde que cheguei.
  • Questions about length: Há quanto tempo você mora aqui? or Faz quanto tempo que você mora aqui?
  • Plans and predictions: daqui a + time. Volto daqui a uma hora. Daqui a pouco = in a little while.
  • Faz três anos que eu estudo português.I've been studying Portuguese for three years.present = still true
  • O ônibus passou cinco minutos atrás.The bus came by five minutes ago.atrás = ago (speech)
  • Moro em Fortaleza desde 2019.I've lived in Fortaleza since 2019.desde + a point in time
  • Você já almoçou? — Ainda não.Have you had lunch yet? — Not yet.já / ainda não
  • A Bia não trabalha mais no banco.Bia doesn't work at the bank any more.não… mais = not any more

Petit exercice

1 / 3

Faz dois anos que eu (morar) em Manaus.

I've lived in Manaus for two years.

Contrasts and traps

  • The tense changes the meaning. Faz dois anos que moro aqui (I still live here) vs Faz dois anos que me mudei pra cá (the move happened two years ago).
  • há or a? Há (with h) looks back. A (no h) looks forward or measures distance: daqui a dois dias, a dez minutos do centro. Daqui há is a classic spelling slip.
  • One "ago" is enough. Say há dois dias or dois dias atrás. Há dois dias atrás is common in speech, but it says the same thing twice.
  • desde + a length of time is wrong. Desde 2020, desde março, but há dois anos (not desde dois anos).
  • Not tenho morado. Tenho morado means "lately I've been living". For a total length of time, use the present: Moro aqui há dois anos.
  • já in questions means "ever" or "yet". The short answers are Já! (yes) and Ainda não (not yet).
  • In casual speech you will also hear tem in this role: Tem dois anos que eu moro aqui. Understand it; write faz or há.

If you speak Spanish

The logic is the one you know from hace: hace dos años = há or faz dois anos, with the present for "for" and the past for "ago". Llevo dos años aquí becomes Moro aqui há dois anos or Faz dois anos que moro aqui. Don't add desde: desde hace is simply há or faz. Todavía is ainda, because Portuguese todavia means "however". Ya is já, ya no is não… mais, and dentro de dos semanas is daqui a duas semanas.
