What it is

At B1 and B2 you learned which triggers take the subjunctive. At C1 the question becomes subtler: the same verb can take either mood, and the mood changes the meaning. Siento que tienes razón means "I feel you're right"; Siento que estés triste means "I'm sorry you're sad". Negation and a few framing structures (no es que, no porque, el hecho de que) also push a clause into the subjunctive. Choosing well lets you say exactly how committed you are to what you report.

How it works

The indicative presents the content of the clause as information: something you perceive, know or pass on. The subjunctive presents it as something you react to, accept, want or deny.

Verb+ indicative+ subjunctive

When to use it

Verbs that change meaning

Read the main verb, then ask: am I passing on a fact, or reacting to it?

  • Siento que algo no va bien.I sense that something is wrong.perception → indicative
  • Siento mucho que no puedas venir.I'm very sorry you can't come.regret → subjunctive
  • Entiendo que ya han firmado.I gather they have already signed.information → indicative
  • Entiendo que estés enojado.I understand why you are angry.sympathy → subjunctive
  • Me dijo que venía.She told me she was coming.report → indicative
  • Me dijo que viniera. She told me to come.order → subjunctive

Negated verbs of perception, communication and belief

When you deny a perception or a statement, the clause usually goes into the subjunctive: No veo que tengas motivos para quejarte. No digo que sea fácil. No es verdad que lo hayan despedido. Two exceptions matter at C1. In negative commands and rhetorical questions the speaker actually asserts the content, so the indicative stays: No creas que no me he dado cuenta. ¿No ves que está lloviendo? And with no saber in the past, a fact that is true stays indicative: No sabía que estabas aquí.

No es que…, es que…

To reject a possible explanation and give the real one, Spanish uses no es que + subjunctive and es que + indicative: No es que no quiera ayudarte; es que no tengo tiempo. The same logic applies to causes: no porque + subjunctive, sino porque + indicative: No lo digo porque esté celoso, sino porque me preocupo por ti.

El hecho de que and que as a subject

When a clause becomes the subject of a comment, it usually takes the subjunctive, even if it is true: El hecho de que nadie se haya quejado no significa nada. Que no te guste no quiere decir que sea malo. The indicative after el hecho de que exists, but it sounds like a news report, not a comment.

Contrasts and traps

  • Siento que tienes razón is not an apology. With the indicative, sentir means "feel, sense".
  • Me dijo que venía / viniera: information versus an instruction. Mixing them up changes the message.
  • Entiendo que estás / estés cansado: the first reports what you gathered; the second shows empathy.
  • No es que always takes the subjunctive; the es que that follows does not.
  • Affirmative belief stays indicative: Creo que tienes razón, Me parece que llueve. Only the negated version flips: No creo que tengas razón.

If you speak Portuguese

Most of this transfers: Não é que eu não queira, Entendo que você esteja chateado, Sinto muito que você tenha que ir map straight onto Spanish. Two traps are specific to Brazilians. First, dizer para + infinitive (ele me disse para ligar) does not work in standard Spanish: a reported order needs decir que + subjunctive, me dijo que lo llamara. Second, Portuguese often avoids the clause with the personal infinitive, o fato de você chegar atrasado; Spanish has no personal infinitive, so you need el hecho de que llegues tarde.
