Krótka odpowiedź

What it is

The present perfect subjunctive (pretérito perfecto de subjuntivo) is the compound form haya + participle. It does two jobs. First, it is what the present perfect or the preterite becomes under a subjunctive trigger when the main verb is in the present: Ha llegado bien (a fact) → Espero que haya llegado bien (a hope). Second, it describes an action that will already be finished at a future moment, mostly after cuando and hasta que: Cuando hayas terminado, avísame.

How to form it

Take the present subjunctive of haber and add the participle, which never changes for gender or number.

nosotroshayamoshayamos hecho

Regular participles end in -ado (-ar verbs) and -ido (-er and -ir verbs). The common irregular ones appear constantly, so learn them as a set:

Verbs like leer, creer, oír and traer write an accent on the í: leído, creído, oído, traído. Pronouns go before haya, never between the two parts: No creo que se lo hayan dicho.

When to use it

1. A present reaction to something that has happened (or may have). The main verb is in the present and the event comes earlier. Any subjunctive trigger works:

  • hope: Espero que hayas dormido bien.
  • denied opinion and doubt: No creo que se hayan ido todavía. Dudo que hayan visto el mensaje.
  • possibility: Es posible que me haya equivocado. Puede que ya hayan cerrado.
  • emotion: Me alegra que hayas encontrado trabajo. Siento que no hayas podido venir.
  • judgement: Es raro que no haya llamado.
  • ojalá about an outcome you don't know yet: Ojalá haya aprobado.

2. Completion in the future. After cuando, hasta que, después de que and similar connectors, it presents a future action as finished before the next step: Cuando hayas leído el contrato, fírmalo. No te levantas de la mesa hasta que hayas terminado. The plain present subjunctive is also correct (cuando leas el contrato); the compound form stresses that one thing has to be done first.

  • Espero que hayas dormido bien.I hope you slept well.hope about a past event
  • Puede que ya hayan cerrado. They may have closed already.possibility
  • Cuando hayas leído el contrato, fírmalo. When you've read the contract, sign it.completion in the future

Contrasts and traps

  • Not yet, or already? Me alegra que vengas (you're coming, now or soon) vs Me alegra que hayas venido (you came). Espero que llegues bien (said before the trip) vs Espero que hayas llegado bien (said after it).
  • The trigger decides the mood. Creo que lo ha hecho vs No creo que lo haya hecho; Sé que han llegado vs Espero que hayan llegado.
  • Present perfect or imperfect subjunctive? For a finished past event, especially with a time expression, Latin American Spanish often uses the imperfect subjunctive: No creo que lo hiciera ayer means the same as No creo que lo haya hecho ayer. Both are correct. For completion in the future, only haya works: cuando hayas terminado.
  • Ojalá haya or ojalá hubiera? Ojalá haya aprobado means you don't know the result yet and hope it went well. Ojalá hubiera aprobado means she failed, and you regret it.
  • ✗ haiga is heard in informal speech in many regions, but it isn't standard. Write haya.
  • No future after cuando. ✗ Cuando habrás terminado → Cuando hayas terminado.

If you speak Portuguese

Espero que você tenha chegado bem transfers almost word for word: Espero que hayas llegado bien. Two adjustments: the auxiliary is always haber, never tener (✗ tengas llegado), and the Portuguese future perfect subjunctive quando você tiver terminado becomes cuando hayas terminado. Watch the participles too: resolvido → resuelto, posto → puesto, voltado → vuelto.
