Possessives & the dele/dela fix
Possessivos (meu, seu, nosso) e dele/dela
La réponse courte
Possessives agree with the thing owned, not the owner: minha mãe, meu pai. In Brazilian speech seu/sua means “your”, so for “his”, “her” and “their” Brazilians put dele, dela, deles, delas after the noun: o carro dele.
you (você): seu, sua
- o seu carro
- a sua casa
- Qual é o seu nome?
him, her: dele, dela
- o carro dele
- a casa dela
- Qual é o nome dele?
Formes clés
- meu, minha, meus, minhas · seu, sua, seus, suas (your) · nosso, nossa, nossos, nossas
- his/her/their: o carro dele, a casa dela, os filhos deles
- Article optional with meu/seu/nosso: (o) meu irmão; obligatory with dele: o carro dele
- teu/tua: tu-regions, and colloquially with você (tua casa)
- Body parts and clothes take the article: Quebrei o braço. Lavei as mãos.

What it is
Possessives say whose something is: my mother, your phone, our city. In Portuguese, meu, seu, nosso agree in gender and number with the thing owned, not with the owner. A man says minha mãe; a woman says meu pai.
For his, her and their, Brazilians don’t use seu in conversation. They put dele, dela, deles, delas after the noun: o carro dele (his car), a casa dela (her house). The reason is practical: in speech seu means your, so o seu carro would be heard as your car.
How to form it
| owner | masc. | fem. | masc. pl. | fem. pl. |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| eu (my) | meu | minha | meus | minhas |
| você (your) | seu | sua | seus | suas |
| nós · a gente (our) | nosso | nossa | nossos | nossas |
- The ending matches the noun: meu irmão, minha irmã, meus pais, minhas amigas.
- seu, sua go with você: Qual é o seu nome? With a gente, the possessive is nosso: A gente ama a nossa cidade.
- In the South and parts of the North and Northeast, people who use tu say teu, tua, and many Brazilians mix them with você in casual speech: Cadê tua mochila? Recognise them; seu and sua are always safe.
| owner | after the noun | example |
|---|---|---|
| ele (his) | dele | o carro dele |
| ela (her) | dela | a casa dela |
| eles (their) | deles | os filhos deles |
| elas (their) | delas | as amigas delas |
| vocês (your, to a group) | de vocês | o apartamento de vocês |
- dele is de + ele. It agrees with the owner (ele, ela, eles, elas), not with the thing: a mãe dele (his mother), o pai dela (her father).
- The noun keeps its article, just like o carro do Pedro: o carro dele, a casa dela.
- When you talk to several people, your is de vocês: Qual é o endereço de vocês?
When to use it
- Essa é a minha mãe.This is my mother.minha agrees with mãe
- Qual é o seu nome?What’s your name?seu = your (você)
- Qual é o nome dele?What’s his name?his = noun + dele
- A casa dela é aqui perto.Her house is close by.her = noun + dela
- Esse livro é meu.This book is mine.mine = meu
- Essa é a Marta, uma amiga minha. This is Marta, a friend of mine.a friend of mine
The article is optional with meu, seu and nosso: meu irmão and o meu irmão are both correct. It’s more frequent in the Southeast and South, and very common after a preposition: na minha casa, do meu pai. With dele and dela the article is obligatory: o carro dele.
Body parts and clothes usually take the plain article, because it’s obvious whose they are: Lavo as mãos antes de comer (I wash my hands before eating). Ele tira o casaco (He takes his coat off).
Contrasts and traps
- Meu mãe ✗ → minha mãe. Agreement is with the thing owned.
- A dela casa ✗ → a casa dela. dele and dela come after the noun.
- O Paulo e a namorada dela ✗ → a namorada dele. dele/dela follow the owner (Paulo), not the noun.
- O carro de ele ✗ → o carro dele. de + ele always contract.
- seu for his/her is correct in writing (o presidente e sua esposa), but in conversation it sounds like your. Say dele/dela.
- Mine, yours, ours use the same words: É meu. A minha é azul. Esse é o nosso.
If you speak Spanish
Spanish su covers his, her, your and their. Brazilian Portuguese splits it: seu/sua is your (você), and dele, dela, deles, delas after the noun handle the third person, a bit like Spanish la casa de él, but contracted and normal in every register. Unlike mi, tu, su, Portuguese possessives change for gender (meu pai, minha mãe), and the article Spanish forbids (el mi libro) is fine in Portuguese: o meu livro. Un amigo mío is um amigo meu.
