The short answer

To describe a person or a thing with a whole clause, Portuguese uses que, for people and things alike, as the subject or the object of the clause: A mulher que trabalha comigo é de Manaus (the woman who works with me), O filme que a gente viu foi ótimo (the film we saw). Unlike English "that", que can never be left out. When there is no noun before it, English "what" or "the thing that", say o que: Não entendi o que você disse. For places, onde works like "where": a cidade onde eu nasci.

How to form it

Three things to watch:

  • The verb after que agrees with the noun when que is the subject: os vizinhos que moram aqui, a vizinha que mora aqui.
  • que is never dropped, even where English drops "that": o livro que eu comprei.

Contrasts and traps

  • Never drop que. "The book I bought" → o livro que eu comprei; o livro eu comprei is wrong.
  • que or o que? After a noun, que: a coisa que eu quero. With no noun, o que: o que eu quero. Não entendi que você disse is wrong.
  • que, not quem, after a noun: a moça que trabalha aqui. Quem appears after prepositions (a pessoa com quem eu falei), which comes at B1.
  • Agreement: the verb after que agrees with the noun it refers to: as meninas que moram aqui, not que mora.
  • onde is for places only. For times, say que or em que: no dia que a gente se conheceu (the day we met), not no dia onde.
  • Speech drops prepositions. In casual speech you will hear o filme que eu te falei (the film I told you about); careful Portuguese says o filme de que eu te falei. Understand it, but don't copy it into formal writing.
  • tudo o que, with tudo: Comi tudo o que tinha. Both tudo o que and tudo que are fine.

If you speak Spanish

Good news: Spanish works almost the same way, so que will feel natural, and it can't be dropped in either language. Two spellings change: lo que → o que (No entendí lo que dijiste → Não entendi o que você disse), and donde → onde (la ciudad donde nací → a cidade onde eu nasci). Todo lo que is tudo o que, with tudo. And where Spanish says la persona que or el que after a preposition, keep to que or onde for now; the longer forms come later.
