The short answer

Both verbs mean "to know", but they split the job. Saber is for information and skills: Sei o endereço (I know the address), Sei nadar (I can swim). Conhecer is for what you know by experience: people, places, books, restaurants: Conheço a Bia, Você conhece Recife? (have you been to Recife?).

How to form it

Saber is irregular in the eu present (sei) and in the past (soube). Conhecer is regular, but watch the spelling: conheço takes ç before o, while the other forms keep a plain c before e and i.

saber: presentsaber: perfeitoconhecer: presentconhecer: perfeito
euseisoubeconheçoconheci
você / ele / ela / a gentesabesoubeconhececonheceu

The imperfeito is regular for both: sabia, conhecia, with no written accent.

When to use it

Saber:

  • facts and information: Você sabe o telefone dela?
  • a clause with que, onde, se, quando: Sei que ela mora aqui. Você sabe onde fica o ponto de ônibus?
  • skills, with an infinitive: Minha avó sabe fazer tapioca. Você sabe dirigir?
  • in the perfeito, found out: Soube da notícia ontem (I heard the news yesterday). In speech Brazilians also say fiquei sabendo.

Contrasts and traps

  • The past changes the meaning. Eu sabia = I knew (a state); eu soube = I found out (a moment). Eu conhecia o João = I knew João; eu conheci o João = I met João.
  • saber, poder or conseguir? Sei nadar = I know how to swim. Posso nadar = I'm allowed to. Consigo nadar até a boia = I manage to swim to the buoy.
  • Prazer em te conhecer (nice to meet you) uses conhecer, because you are meeting a person.
  • saber de = know about, hear about: Você soube do casamento da Lívia?
  • Sabe? at the end of a sentence is a filler, like "you know?": Eu tava muito cansada, sabe?
  • Names take the article in most of Brazil: Conheço o Pedro, Conheço a Júlia.

If you speak Spanish

The split is the same as saber / conocer, so focus on the forms: sé → sei, supe → soube, conozco → conheço. Portuguese has no personal a: conozco a Juan → conheço o João (in conheço a Maria, the a is the feminine article). And saber a (to taste of) is ter gosto de: Esse suco tem gosto de manga.
