What it is

Se is one of the most frequent words in Portuguese, and it does at least seven different jobs. Two of them are not even the same word: the conjunction se ("if", "whether") and the pronoun se. The pronoun, in turn, has several uses. Advanced reading, especially of news, reports and contracts, depends on telling them apart quickly.

The seven uses

TypeHow to recognise itExample
1. Conjunction (if, whether)opens a clause; never hyphenated to a verbSe chover, fico em casa. / Não sei se ele vem.
2. Reflexiveyou can add «a si mesmo»Ela se olhou no espelho.
3. Reciprocalplural subject; add «um ao outro»Os dois se abraçaram.
4. Pronominal verbthe verb needs it (queixar-se, arrepender-se)Ele se arrependeu.
5. Passive (partícula apassivadora)transitive verb; becomes «… é/são vendido(s)»Vendem-se casas.
6. Indeterminate (índice de indeterminação)verb + preposition or intransitive; always singularPrecisa-se de técnicos.
7. Expressiveadds nuance (leaving, abruptness)Ele se foi. / Se mandou!

Change-of-state verbs belong to the pronominal family too: Ela se casou, Eles se mudaram, A porta se abriu.

Passive or indeterminate? The agreement test

This is where formal writing is strict:

  • Passive se goes with a transitive verb without a preposition. The noun is the grammatical subject, so the verb agrees with it: Vendem-se casas = Casas são vendidas.
  • Indeterminate se goes with a verb that takes a preposition (precisar de, tratar de, gostar de) or no object at all (Vive-se bem aqui). There is no subject to agree with, so the verb is always singular: Precisa-se de técnicos.
SingularPlural
Vende-se uma casa.Vendem-se casas.
Aluga-se sala.Alugam-se salas.
Precisa-se de técnico.Precisa-se de técnicos.
Trata-se de um engano.Trata-se de questões delicadas.

In speech many Brazilians say Vende-se casas, reading se as "one" (one sells houses). It is widespread on handwritten signs, but the norm, and every exam, expects Vendem-se casas. The opposite mistake, Precisam-se de técnicos, is a hypercorrection.

Position

Speech puts se before the verb everywhere: Se vende, A gente se vê. Formal writing follows two rules: never start a sentence with se (Trata-se de…, Vendem-se…), and put it before the verb after words like não, que, já, aqui: Não se sabe, Aqui se vive bem.

How to tell them apart: quick tests

  1. Can you swap it for caso or na hipótese de? → conjunction.
  2. Can you add a si mesmo(a)? → reflexive. Um ao outro? → reciprocal.
  3. Remove se: does the verb still exist with the same meaning? If not → pronominal (arrepender-se, queixar-se).
  4. Can you rewrite it with ser + participle? → passive (Alugam-se salas → Salas são alugadas).
  5. Verb + preposition, or no object, and no passive possible → indeterminate.

Não sei se ele se arrependeu has two: the first is the conjunction ("whether"), the second the pronominal verb arrepender-se.

In context

Read this notice from a community centre in Juiz de Fora and identify each se:

Precisa-se de voluntários para o mutirão de sábado. Se você se interessar, inscreva-se na secretaria. Doam-se as sobras de material às escolas do bairro. Trata-se de uma iniciativa antiga, que se renova todo ano.

Precisa-se de is indeterminate (preposition, singular verb); Se você… is the conjunction; se interessar is the pronominal verb interessar-se; inscreva-se is a pronominal verb in a formal imperative; Doam-se as sobras is passive (plural, agreeing with sobras); Trata-se de is indeterminate again; and se renova describes a change of state: the initiative "is renewed".

Contrasts and traps

  • Se trata de… at the start of a formal sentence → Trata-se de…
  • Vende-se casas (speech) → Vendem-se casas (writing).
  • Precisam-se de motoristas ✗ → Precisa-se de motoristas.
  • se vs si: si is the stressed form after prepositions: Ele só pensa em si; with com it becomes consigo.
  • Ele se foi ("he's gone", also a gentle way to say someone died) is not Ele foi ("he went").

If you speak Spanish

Spanish se covers almost the same range (se vende, se fue, se arrepintió), so recognition transfers well. Three differences matter. First, Spanish si ("if") is se in Portuguese: one form, two functions. Second, Portuguese has no se lo: se lo dije is eu disse isso a ele or, formally, eu lhe disse. Third, the passive agreement you know from se venden casas is exactly the Portuguese norm, vendem-se casas, but with Portuguese pronoun position.
