The short answer
Brazilian Portuguese has two imperatives for você. Among friends and family you use the ordinary present form: Fala!, Vem cá!, Espera aí!. In polite speech, with o senhor / a senhora, and on signs, instructions and ads, you use the standard form: Fale, Venha, Espere. Very often Brazilians skip the command altogether and ask: Pode fechar a porta?
How to form it

| esperar | espera | espere | esperem |
| fazer (faço) | faz | faça | façam |

- Speech form: the você/ele form of the present: fala, come, abre, faz, diz, põe, sai, vem, vai, traz.
- Standard form: start from the eu form of the present, drop the -o and swap the vowel: -ar verbs take -e (falo → fale), -er and -ir verbs take -a (como → coma, abro → abra). Irregular eu forms carry over: faço → faça, digo → diga, ponho → ponha, trago → traga, venho → venha, peço → peça, ouço → ouça, durmo → durma.
- vocês: add -m to the standard form: falem, venham, façam.
- Five to learn by heart: ser → seja, estar → esteja, ir → vá, dar → dê, saber → saiba.
- Spelling keeps the sound of the stem: ficar → fique, pegar → pegue, começar → comece.
- Negative: put não in front. Speech: Não fala isso! Standard: Não fale isso!
- Pronouns go first in speech: Me passa o sal, Me espera aí. A formal written command that opens the sentence puts it after the verb: Sente-se, por favor.
When to use it
- Friends, family, people your age: the speech form. Vem cá, olha isso!
- Strangers, older people, customers: the standard form, or better, a question. Por favor, sente-se. / Pode sentar.
- Signs, recipes, instructions, ads: the standard form. Empurre. Não fume. Misture bem.
- Softeners: Pode + infinitive (Pode repetir?), Dá pra + infinitive (Dá pra abaixar o som?), por favor, a diminutive (Espera um minutinho), and Vamos! or Bora! for "let's".
- Vem cá, olha isso!Come here, look at this!speech form
- Por favor, aguarde um momento. Please wait a moment.standard, polite
- Não esquece o guarda-chuva!Don't forget your umbrella!negative, speech
- Pode fechar a janela, por favor?Could you close the window, please?request instead of a command

Contrasts and traps
- Both forms are correct; what changes is the register. Fale to a close friend sounds stiff, and fala on a sign looks careless.
- Pode + infinitive is not a question about ability. Pode sentar means "please sit down", and Pode deixar means "leave it to me".
- Olha (look) and Escuta (listen) open a sentence to get attention: Olha, hoje não dá.
- Forms like não fales or descobre belong to tu in Portugal. In Brazilian neutral text, use the você forms: não fale, descubra.
- After vem or vai, the next verb follows directly, with no a: Vem ver!, Vai dormir!
If you speak Spanish
Your usted commands map onto the standard form: hable → fale, venga → venha, haga → faça, traiga → traga, ponga → ponha. The tú commands look like the speech form but are spelled differently: ven → vem, di → diz, pon → põe, sal → sai, haz → faz. For negatives, don't copy no hables: Brazilian speech says não fala, the standard says não fale. And the pronoun goes first: pásame la sal → me passa o sal.
