The short answer

English "everything" and "all / every / whole" are two different words in Portuguese. Tudo means "everything" and stands on its own: Tudo bem?, Comi tudo. Todo / toda / todos / todas goes with a noun and agrees with it: todo dia (every day), o dia todo (the whole day), todos os alunos (all the students), todo mundo (everybody). Around them sit the everyday indefinites: alguém / ninguém (someone / no one), alguma coisa or algo / nada (something / nothing), algum / nenhum (some, any / no, none) and cada (each).

Contrasts and traps

  • tudo or todo? Comi tudo (I ate everything) vs Comi o bolo todo (I ate the whole cake). If there is no noun for it to go with, the word is tudo.
  • todo dia or o dia todo? Every day vs all day long: Trabalho todo dia ≠ Trabalho o dia todo.
  • todo mundo has no article and a singular verb: Todo mundo sabe, not todo mundo sabem. Todo o mundo, with the article, also exists, but it sounds formal and can mean "the whole world".
  • tudo bem, never todo bem. The two words differ by one vowel, so listen for it: TU-du vs TO-du.
  • ninguém and nada after the verb need não: Não vi ninguém, not vi ninguém.
  • nenhum agrees with its noun and stays singular: nenhum problema, nenhuma ideia.
  • alguma coisa sounds more natural than algo in conversation: Quer comer alguma coisa?
  • In Portugal "everybody" is toda a gente; Brazilians say todo mundo.

If you speak Spanish

Spanish todo does both jobs; Portuguese splits it. Todo meaning "everything" is tudo, todo el día is o dia todo, todos los días is todo dia or todos os dias, and todo el mundo is todo mundo, with no article. Todo bien is tudo bem. Nadie is ninguém and alguien is alguém (note the -ém ending), ninguno is nenhum and algún is algum, while nada and cada are the same words in both languages.
